Basic Differentiation Rules & Chain Rule

Problem # 1: Differentiate 𝑦 = (2𝑥 + 5)(𝑥 + 3).

1. Using the product rule,

𝑑 𝑑 𝑑
𝑦′ = 2𝑥 + 5 𝑥 + 3 = 2𝑥 + 5 ∙ 𝑥+3 + [2𝑥 + 5] ∙ (𝑥 + 3)
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥
= 2𝑥 + 5 1 + (2)(𝑥 + 3)
= 2𝑥 + 5 + 2𝑥 + 6

𝑦′ = 4𝑥 + 11

2. By multiplying first the two binomials before taking the derivative

𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 5𝑥 + 15
𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 + 11𝑥 + 15
𝑦 ′ = 4𝑥 + 11

4𝑥 3 +8𝑥
Problem # 2: Differentiate 𝑦 =
2𝑥

Simplify first the rational expression before taking the derivative.

4𝑥 3 + 8𝑥 4𝑥 3 8𝑥
= + = 2𝑥 2 + 4
2𝑥 2𝑥 2𝑥
𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 + 4 Note: 𝑥 ≠ 0

𝑦 ′ = 4𝑥
Using the Quotient Rule:
𝑑 𝑑
2𝑥 4𝑥 3 + 8𝑥 − 4𝑥 3 + 8𝑥 (2𝑥)

𝑦 = 𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥
2𝑥 2

2𝑥 12𝑥 2 + 8 − (4𝑥 3 + 8𝑥)(2)
𝑦 =
4𝑥 2
24𝑥 3 + 16𝑥 − 8𝑥 3 − 16𝑥 16𝑥 3
𝑦′ = = = 4𝑥

Put 2𝑥 + 3 4 in the numerator using the concept of negative exponent before

taking the derivative.
𝑦 = 5 2𝑥 + 3 −4

Using Chain Rule,

′ −4−1

𝑦 = −4 5 2𝑥 + 3 2𝑥 + 3
𝑑𝑥
𝑦 ′ = −20 2𝑥 + 3 −5 (2)

𝑦 ′ = −40 2𝑥 + 3 −5
