Mediation
What is the goal of a
mediation?

Why do we provide mediation

for our residents?
MEDIATION

The purpose of a mediation IS:

- To help roommates communicate with each other
- An opportunity to identify issues and “clear the air” between roommates
- To teach roommates ways to solve ongoing conflict themselves

The purpose of a mediation is NOT:

- To make a judgement as to who is right and who is wrong
- A chance to solve residents issue for them
- Just a barrier to a Room Change
The Mediation
Management Model

(How to Do a Mediation)
• RA meets with roommates
Problem Recognition
at an agreed upon time
and location to discuss
concerns.
• RA listens alternately to
Problem Definition both roommates’ stories,
using paraphrasing to
achieve full understanding
of the problem(s).
• RA asks both roommates if
Commitment they are willing to solve the
problem.
• If both roommates agree to
attempt to resolve their
Highlighting Behaviors conflict, both roommates
identify specific pleasing
and displeasing behaviors
that each other do.
• Roommates trade and
negotiate specific
behaviors to satisfy the
needs of each.
Negotiation
• Note: Residents cannot
agree to terms that violate
laws, Standards of
Residence or Student
Code of Conduct.
• A contract is made using
the specific likes and
dislikes of each roommate.
Contracting • Online Roommate
Agreement should also be
updated with this
information.
• RA checks in with each
Follow Up roommate after a defined
period of time to see how
things are going.
