TUNGSTEN INERT GAS (TIG) WELDING TO TENSILE STRENGTH
AND MICROSTRUCTURE ON MEDIUM CARBON STEEL

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding is a welding process that use noble gases as a
barrier to prevent oxidation of welding material from outside air. To generate an
electric arc, non-consumables electrodes made of tungsten or metal alloys that
have very high melting point is used. Medium carbon steel is steel with a carbon
content of 0,36% and is a good enough material to be used in the welding process.
This study aims to determine the tensile strength of the weld Tungsten Inert Gas
(TIG) on Medium carbon steel by using a different variation of the current
strength. From the testing that has been done, it is known that the tensile strength
of the material is highest at 200 amperes welding results with value – average
tensile strength of 680 MPa.While the tensile strength of the material was lowest
for the 160 ampere welding results with value – average tensile strength of 573,33
MPa. The results of micro photograph show the differences between the base
metal (raw material) with the weld metal, the metal welds increasingly small and
fine microstructure tensile yield strength values are higher.
