Service life of piston skirts Cus 227 • 06/06

Engine types L+V 32/40, L 40/54 and L+V 48/60
Background Some of the L+V 32/40, L 40/54 and L+V 48/60 engines in our medium -
speed family of engines have been operating successfully on ships and in
power stations for more than twenty years. One series of these engines has
already been operating for more than 90,000 hours.

In general, all components of a diesel engine suffer a certain amount of wear

and tear and ageing during the course of their use due to the stresses and
strains to which they are subjected. Wear depends strongly on the operating
conditions under which an engine is used. This also applies to the piston
skirts of these medium-speed engines. Within the scope of our constant field
observations and further developments, we have found that the engines
operate reliably with the intended original components.

Measures Due to calculation and precise analysis on worn piston skirts, we have
discovered that a theoretical service life of this item, amounts to
approxirnately 80,000 operating hours with an adequate safety factor.

It goes without saying that this service life depends on the conditions of
operation during this long period of operation, calculations being based on
permanent engine operation under 100 % engine load without detrimentally
influencing circumstances such as excessive exhaust gas temperatures,
incorrect ignition pressure, improper maintenance, hydraulic impacts or
similar. Such unfavourable operating conditions shorten the theoretical
service life.

Recommendation To ensure safe and reliable engine operation, we therefore recommend

renewal of the piston skirts after approximately 80,000 hours operation.
