Time Process Components

(min.)

10 min *Anticipatory Set

Beat Master Game (This game will be played outside to accommodate
COVID-19 regulations).
- TTW instruct students to form a circle
- TTW take one student out of the circle and have them turn around so
that they cannot see the circle.
- TTW choose one student to be the “beat master”
- The “beat master” will create a beat and set a rhythm for the rest of the
group to follow such as clapping their hands, tapping their thigh, or
snapping.
- Once the group is on the same page, TTW allow the student who was
removed from the circle back in and have them stand in the center of
the circle. Their goal is to guess who the “beat master” is.
- The “beat master” will attempt to change the beat multiple times in a
round without giving their identity away. The rest of the group will
continue to follow these changes.
- After a few rounds, TTW point out that good leadership was required
for the beat master to conceal his/her identity.
- The class will return indoors to the classroom.
Discussion:
What are some qualities of a good leader?
- Write three qualities on an index card.
- Humility
- Courage
- Confidence
- Purposeful

1 min *State the Objectives (grade-level terms)

I can critically think about what makes a good leader.
I understand what made George Washington a good leader.
I can demonstrate how George Washington contributed to the new nation.

8 min *Instructional Input or Procedure

TTW informally Pre Assess what TS know about GW?
- Based on previous standards they should know that he (1) was born in
Virginia, (2) was a leader who helped develop the country, (3) was the first
president of the U.S., (4) is known as the “Father of Our Country,” and (5)led
the fight for freedom from England to help establish a new country.

TTW will use Washington Slides in “A NEW NATION” to teach and discuss
standard related content to TS.

1 min *Modeling
- TTW show how the post assessment on slides 10-14 will work.
- TTW read the multiple choice question.
- TSW hold up one finger if they think the answer is a, two
fingers for b, three fingers for c, and four fingers for d.
- TTW share an example of one of George Washington’s leadership traits
and how the teacher can apply that same leadership trait in his/her own
life.

4 min *Check for Understanding

Ask questions and have students raise a hand with 1,2,3, or 4 fingers held up.

6 min *Guided Practice

GW Bio Worksheet

15 min *Independent Practice

TSW read pages 114-116 in textbooks and write a two-three paragraph journal
reflection about George Washington’s leadership and how they can apply the
same leadership traits to their own lives.

0 min Assessment
GW Bio Worksheet and Journal Entry

3 min *Closure
TTW close by discussing the leadership qualities of George Washington and
how students can apply the same leadership traits to their own life.

Differentiation Strategies (enrichment, accommodations, remediation, or by learning

style).
- For students with lower-level writing skills, TTW work with the students to write
three bullet points of George Washington’s leadership qualities, a sentence about
whether he was a good leader, and two bullet point ideas of how they can show
this leadership in their own life.
- For students with difficulty reading, play the audio version of the Our Virginia
textbook.
- For students who complete the independent practice early, TTW instruct them to
present the ideas in their journal to each other and discuss.

Classroom Management Issues (optional)

- TTW Review Attention Grabbing Strategy as this is one of the first lessons back
in the classroom after virtual learning.
