When we hear the word invention, it comes to our mind that it is unique, and it is not like
anything. It might be the only one or the first that is why we believe and consider a specific thing
as an invention. During my childhood days, I get fascinated when I hear about inventions
because I define it as something cool which is very innovative and useful in our daily lives. I can
still remember that the weather forecaster called “Kuya Kim” or Kim Atienza who always gives
trivia and one of his trivia was the inventions of different people coming from the Western or
Eastern countries and Filipino inventions that we are very proud of. Inventions are not hard to
find, I can tell you that wherever you go or whatever that you are looking at right now is an
invention and for sure that thing has a use, all inventions has their own respective uses. If it does
not have a use, then it won’t be invented.

There are inventions that we always see, we might be using it every day, it might be
inside our house or we can see it outdoors too. I was reflecting while looking at the things that I
always see inside or outside of our house and I made research for it and why was it one of the
most popular or most useful inventions that was made. The first one is commonly seen inside or
outside the house, it is the wheel that makes movement faster and with less effort, when the
wheel was invented it was used to partner with horses so the passenger can ride the “calesa”
while the one who controls the horse sits at the horse. Another example of it are the chariots
which run on wheels and the horse is the one in charged of making it move. Later on, it was also
adopted by trains, automobiles and airplanes.

The second one is the nail, it might sound ridiculous that I included this on the list. A
small thing but very useful, if you have encountered a wood that is being connected, you’ll see
that nails are being used to connect it, a hammer is being used so it can go together with the
wood and connect the other pieces of it, not only used for wood but other construction uses too.
The third one is the compass, who knows that this thing will be useful and will be currently used
in today’s generation? The ancient mariners used to navigate by the stars but that method didn’t
work during the day or on cloudy nights, so it is not safe to voyage far from land. The Chinese
invented the first compass between the 9th and 11th century which was made of Iodestone which
is a naturally magnetized iron ore. Because of this, the mariners can navigate safely far from land
increasing sea trade. Now, there are lots of advancement in the navigation system such as the
GPS or Global Positioning System where you can easily determine where you are now and many
more things.

The third one is the printing press which was invented by a German named Johannes
Gutenberg around 1440 and was the first to create mechanized process that transferred the ink
from the movable type to paper. With Gutenberg’s creation the printing presses increased the
speed and led to rapid and widespread dissemination of knowledge for the first time in history.
The fourth one is the internal combustion engine where a fuel releases a high temperature gas
which, as it expands applies a force to piston, moving it. This engine is now used on a variety of
machines including modern cars and aircraft. The fifth one is the telephone by Alexander
Graham Bell for the electric telephone in 1876. He drew this inspiration from teaching the deaf
and also visiting his hearing-impaired mom, according to PBS. He called the first telephone an
“electrical speech machine,” and later on the telephone evolved and has improved in so many
ways by the technology.

The sixth one is the light bulb, the thing that we see inside our houses which does not
give us problems if our house is dark. Lightbulbs changed the world by allowing us to be active
at night, according to livescience, two dozen people were inventing incandescent lamps
throughout the 1800s; Thomas Edison is credited at the primary inventor because he created a
completely functional lighting system, including a generator and wiring as well as a carbon-
filament bulb. The seventh one is the paper; we know that the paper played a big role in our life.
From childhood to adulthood the paper has been with us because of its wide use and up to now it
is still needed. The Egyptians had developed a technique for making paper from the pith of the
papyrus plant, a common sight along the bank of Nile. These ancient papermakers knew what
they were doing: Many of these papyrus sheets inscribed with Egyptian hieroglyphics remain
intact and readable, even after more than 5,000 years according to History.com.

The eight one is the concrete which is very visible wherever we go but made by the
Romans where they built the colosseum which was built from concrete. The Romans mixed
limestone with volcanic ash to from a mortar, then packed this thick substance together with
chunks of brick or volcanic tuff to form the basic material for roads, bridges, aqueducts,
buildings and other structures. Today’s scientists have concluded that Roman concrete, though
weaker than modern cement, is astonishingly long lasting, remaining relatively intact even after
centuries of exposure to seawater and other damaging elements. The ninth is a newspaper which
discusses about social issues etc. The newspaper first appeared around 131 B.C and it served as
gazette of political and social happenings in ancient Rome. The ninth invention is the clock, the
clock is one of the most important inventions because it tells us the current time and if it is nearly
morning or evening. Sundials were the first devices that man used to keep track of time, and its
use dates back as long as 6 thousand years. Lastly is Mathematics where the Sumerians used
reeds to keep track of the units, but eventually, with the development of cuneiform, they used
vertical marks on the clay tablets.

A lot of inventions during different times made a huge impact in today’s generation.
Many were improved and many almost stayed the same. If I’m going to choose, I can say that the
most influential invention of all time is Mathematics, it helps shaped the world and all the things
that we see includes Mathematics. A great example is simply our houses and the buildings that
we see outside of our houses. Imagine living a life without mathematics? Then all measurements
will be inaccurate and most structure will fail to stand because of wrong measurements.

Inventions are important to society because it tells us that every human being is
intelligent, and anyone can help shape the world. The inventors also inspire us to create
something that will be very useful and will have a great impact on everyone’s life. The
inventor’s country is also being represented and it is also another way for his/her country to be
respected and well known. The greatest invention which had a greatest impact on society for me
is the printing press, because the information was widely disseminated to the different parts of
the world and it also made things easier and because of this, the accessibility of books and other
written materials became easier and obviously helped educate people.

Inventions inspired us in many ways, inventions played a vital role in our daily lives.
Almost every invention helped us and made things easier, a great example is the vehicle which
originated from the chariots which made travel shorter and faster. That is why inventions will
always help us in different aspects.
A lot of inventions changed the world, it has changed the world in different ways and
different aspects. Some inventions that changed the world for me is the transportation vehicles
such as cars, ships and airplanes. If we are going back to the old times, traveling to a different
country might reach years. But now, we only need few hours or days just to reach a certain
country depending how far is it. Imagine living a life without these kinds of transportation then
for sure travel will be harder than what we think.

We see that a lot of inventions contributed so much and even those inventions from the
ancient times are still being used today. Each invention has their own use and it surely made
things easier for the people living in the current generation which is us. All inventions have a
use, the inventors spent so much years just to make things easier and for us to use it, we must
remember them because they are our ancestors and we are taking part of their inventions.
