Answer the following questions, showing all necessary working to obtain full marks.
1. The functions f (x)=24 ln ( 2 x ) and g(x )=x 3 have the same gradient for one value of x .
[3+1=4 marks]
a. Find this value of x .

b. Determine the common gradient at this value of x (found in a.).

2. Find the gradient of the function [3 marks]
√x
y=x e
at the point ( 4,4 e 2 ) .

3. Calculate the derivative of each of the following functions: [2+2+2=6 marks]

Answers needn’t be fully simplified.
2 x
a. y=(2 x −1)e
(2−t )2
b. g ( t ) =
t+1

c. h ( x )=√ cos 2 ( x )+ 1

4. The function g( x )= 2 is sketched below (in solid blue).
x +3
[2+2+2+(1+2+1)=10 marks]
The function is symmetric about the y−¿axis and has maximum positive
instantaneous gradient at the point A .

a. On the same curve sketch the gradient function.

b. Find the equation of g '( x ) the gradient function.

c. Show that the derivative of g '( x ) (the gradient function) is

Part 2 Calculator allowed. Answer the following questions, showing all necessary working.

5. Consider the function [1+5=6 marks]

( x−4)3
f (x)=
x
a. Using your calculator or otherwise write down the derivative of f (x) .

b. Hence, using calculus find and classify the stationary points of f ( x) .

Detailed algebra is not required.
6. Consider the function y=2 x−x 3 that is graphed below (in solid blue).
[1+1+2+1=5 marks]

a. Sketch the chord on the graph whose gradient represents the average rate of change
from x=−2 to x=1.

b. Find the average rate of change of y=2 x−x 3 over the interval [−2,1].
c. The tangent sketched (in dashed red) represents the instantaneous rate of change
that is the same as the average rate of change found in b.

i. Using the derivative show that the tangent to y=2 x−x 3 at x=−1 has the same
gradient as the average rate of change calculated in a.

ii. Hence find the equation of this tangent line.

iii.
7. The volume of a rectangular prism is 72 cm3 and the base is a rectangle whose length
2 x is twice the width x . The prism is sketched below. [2+4=6 marks]

a. The surface area S in terms of

x and h is

S=6 xh+4 x 2
you don’t need to show this.

Show that the surface area S

of the rectangular is given by
216
S ( x )=4 x 2 +
x

b. Using calculus find the minimum possible surface area for a rectangle with
this volume and base.
