To whom reads...
Preface
Precast  concrete  provides  many  advantages  over  other  systems
which  make  precast  building  enclosures  durable,  long‐lasting
systems  with  low  maintenance  requirements  both  outside  and
inside the building.
Concrete  offers  excellent  resistance  to  weathering  and  corrosion
in  most  climates.  High‐density,  large  format  precast  concrete
panels are, by themselves, resistant to air and water penetration.
Provided  that  panel  joints  are  well‐designed  and  properly
maintained,  the  system,  as  a  whole,  offers  excellent  protection
from climatic conditions.
In  buildings  where  the  panels  are  used  as  the  interior  finish,  a
precast  concrete  wall  panel  offers  a  smooth,  dense  surface  that
may  be  easily  cleaned  thereby  minimizing  the  collection  of  dirt
and  contaminants.  Precast  concrete  also  does  not  impact  the
occupants’ indoor air quality as it does not off‐gas.
Nevertheless, given the environmental exposure that all buildings
must  endure,  all  enclosure  systems  require  some  maintenance
activity over time.
The  objective  of  this  book  is  to  develop  an  understanding  of  the
basic principles of precast concrete structures analysis and design
in  detailed  eight  chapters.  The  main  chapters  on  this  book  deals
with  the  analysis  and  design  of  precast  concrete  building
members, either in therotical side of view or in analytical step‐by‐
step procedures to enable students (4th year in civil engineering
departments) to make an easier transition from theory to problem
solving.  An  additional  design  aids  were  listed  in  details  to  be  a
guide to the first steps in choosing the precast elements wherever
needs.
