Straddles and Pack-Off Equipment

Introduction

Straddles and pack-offs play an important role in the

remediation of wellbore deficiencies. Halliburton's full line
of straddle and pack-off assemblies offer countless variations
for customizable solutions. Whether it is a retrievable casing
patch or a replacement for a worn-out gas lift mandrel,
Halliburton can supply the proper solution.

This chapter describes several types of straddle and pack-

off assemblies used in both casing and tubing applications.
The retrievable solutions featured in this chapter offer
varying installation options from workstring-installed to
wireline-installed.

Halliburton offers a large line of straddles and pack-offs to

help meet your well remediation needs. To determine which
Halliburton straddle is best suited for your situation, contact

PES® BR Modular Straddle System

The PES® BR modular straddle system allows the operator to

run long straddles in individual sections where running one
trip is not possible due to height restrictions. The BR straddle
consists of the retrievable BR packer and RS anchor assembly
and is made up of modules until the desired length of
straddle is in place. The first run places a lower packer with a
seal receptacle immediately below the section to be isolated.
Next, a seal assembly, tubing, and seal receptacle are run and
stung into the lower seal receptacle. The required number of
seal assemblies, tubing, and seal receptacles are then run to
make up the required length of straddle. The final run
consists of a seal assembly, tubing, and upper packer. The
straddle modules may be run and retrieved by slickline,
electric line, coiled tubing, or workstring. The upper and
lower packer are run and retrieved with established RO and
PK2 service tools. The receptacle and seal assemblies are run
and retrieved with industry standard GS tools.

Application
BR modular straddle systems are designed for a wide range
of applications.

The straddle is for use in any well in which pressure

communication between tubing and annulus must be
sealed off. The BR straddle is also for use where long
straddles must be run, but lubricator lengths will not allow
one-trip installation.

DWP Retrievable Straddle Pack-Off Assembly

The Halliburton DWP retrievable straddle pack-off assembly

is a retrievable packer used to affect a seal above and below
leak paths within the tubing. It is currently available in
4 1/2-, 5 1/2-, and 7-in. sizes and in various straddle lengths.
The DWP is available in either a simple straddle or gas lift
configuration. Deployment can be either on coiled tubing or
electric line. To convert a depleted or low production well
into a gas lifted well, the tubing is perforated at optimum
depth and a DWP gas lift unit is installed across the
perforated section of tubing.

Applications
• Repair of hole in tubing without an expensive workover
• Addition or repair of an existing gas lift station without
an expensive workover

Features
• Small OD to run through SCSSV nipple, then pack off in
slightly larger ID tubing below

Benefits
• Very cost-effective, reliable method of delaying a
workover
• Installed or retrieved without the necessity of a rig
• Retrievable on coiled tubing or sand line
• Available in various lengths and metallurgies
• One-trip run and set under pressure on wireline

PES® CV Retrievable Straddle with Integral Safety Valve

The PES® CV retrievable straddle with integral safety valve

is an isolation device installed across from an existing
subsurface safety valve (SSSV) nipple profile or tubing-
retrievable subsurface safety valve in order to attain
control-line communication and integrity where
circumstances do not permit the use of conventional insert
valve configurations.

The straddle is usually deployed on electric line to provide

accurate setting depth correlation. Where a no-go is
incorporated into the design, it is possible to deploy the
device using slickline techniques.

Crossovers/adapters can be provided to utilize customer-

supplied valves where applicable.

Once installed, the valve is operated conventionally by

pressurization of the existing completion control line and
can be retrieved with slickline, braided line, coiled tubing,
or workstring.

Applications
• Used to straddle an existing non-operating tubing-
retrievable safety valve or safety valve nipple when the
sealbores have been damaged and can no longer provide
a seal

Features
• Deployed on wireline or coiled tubing
• Adaptable to most tubing strings

Otis® G Pack-Off Anchors

be continued without pulling tubing. Anchors are run and
set by wireline methods under pressure without killing the
well. Pressure ratings for all Otis pack-off anchors are
dependent upon packing elements and condition of the
tubing string.
The G pack-off anchor is particularly suited for installations
where a high volume of production is desired. The use of an
internal running and pulling neck permits a large internal
diameter. Large bore allows the use of properly sized wireline Centralizers
tools (bottomhole pressure bombs, etc.). The anchor utilizes ®

recess, a slip-type lower stop is available. The upper pack-off
section is usually anchored with a slip-type holddown. The G
pack-off assembly is designed to seal against the tubing wall

Guiberson® RCP Packer-Type Retrievable Casing Patch

Halliburton’s Guiberson® retrievable casing patch (RCP) Features

provides a fast, safe, and economical method of casing repair
• Single-trip run-in
for either permanent or temporary applications. The system
is designed to maintain a tubing/casing annulus for • No permanent loss in casing ID
production and testing applications. • Tubing-retrievable, independent of lower packer/anchor
• Spans long intervals easily and economically
The packer-type RCP consists of upper and lower packer
assemblies, each containing fluid entry ports to maintain • Elastomers can be matched to well conditions.
annular communication. • Packing elements allow usage at great depths.
• Various slip arrangements available
The patch system can be any length. The operator simply
adds additional patch casing to cover the designated
interval. Patch casing can be any common oilfield tubular
with useable outside diameter and inside diameter
measurements and with adequate pressure ratings. This
sometimes means running an integral joint tubing or patch
casing to improve clearances.

Once the RCP is set and in place, the tubing can be rotated
and reciprocated to set a packer or tubing anchor for
production or injection purposes.

The system is fully retrievable and results in no permanent

loss in casing internal diameter. It is retrieved simply by
pulling the tubing string. This allows for easily changing
the setting depth or the length (by adding patch casing)
when needed.

The RCP is an excellent alternative to costly squeeze

cementing operations, and in many cases, can provide a
quick and easy way to get a well repaired and back
on production.

Applications
• Flowing oil and gas wells
• Artificial lift wells including rod pump, plunger lift, jet
pump, and gas lift
• Repair casing leaks
• Shut off unwanted perforations
• Provide a competent annulus for production
