I wandered as a lonely cloud by William Wordsworth.

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

In this stanza the persona is narrating how he was lonely as he wandered based on the line “I
wandered lonely as a cloud”. Cloud symbolizes sadness and darkness because when there are
clouds in sight, the place will immediately go dark and light will go out of sight.
As he wonders alone, he found a crowd of daffodils based on the line, “when all at once I saw a
crowd”. He describes the crowd a host, of Golden daffodils. In this line, the persona has found
happiness as he found the crowd of daffodils- daffodils which are flowers that symbolizes rebirth
and new beginnings. From wandering lonely as a cloud, he has found a new beginning and a reason
to be happy. The daffodils were located beside the lake, beneath the trees.
The persona continuously described the daffodils as fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine,

And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line,
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
In this stanza the author’s feeling of happiness lasted in a longer period as he relates these with
stars that shine. The speaker has been in great happiness even through the night basing from the
line, “continuous as the stars that shine and twinkle on the Milky way”. The comparisons he used in
this stanza reflect the timeline of the poem which is night. Furthermore, the feeling of happiness
seemed to be a “never-ending line” He even tried to guess how many daffodils there were which
were told to be “Ten thousand, I saw at a glance” and they were tossing their head in a sprightly
(meaning full of energy) dance. He again recaptures the movement of the daffodils and
complemented it (in sprightly dance)

The waves beside them danced; but they

Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

Gay-happy
Jocund- cheerful and lighthearted

Even though the waves during that time were also in the scene and dancing, the speaker has always
praised the daffodils according to the line, “the waves beside them danced; but they out-did the
sparkling waves of glee”. Though the, the persona didn’t forget to give the waves a complement, he
preferred the daffodils even more.
In the following line, it implies that the speaker has no choice but to be happy around daffodils,“a
poet could not but be gay (means happy). In such jocund company”
In the next line, the persona continued to gaze at the daffodils saying that these daffodils have
wealth to show. It can be implied that the speaker is being more curious of the capabilities of the
daffodils. He was just about to discover how will the daffodils benefit him or wealth the daffodils
have yet to show.

For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Often, he lies on his couch while being in vacant and pensive mood.
The speaker was in deep serious thought as he envisioned the daffodils flashing upon his
imagination. Thereafter, he described how pleasant and happy was his experience with the
daffodils, “which is the bliss of solitude”. His heart began again to be filled with pleasure and
decided to dance again with the daffodils. As the poem ends, the persona has continuously showed
his love of the daffodils which fueled his passions and pleasures. It was the daffodils who saved
him from being lonely and were the way for him to feel new beginning of happiness.

With the emergence of romanticism in the 18th century, this poem was one of the best
representations of the era. Romanticism is a movement in art where it highlights subjectivity and
individuality. Here in the poem, we can see how he Romanizes a mere flower as he gives it
completements that showed passion and happiness. For some, it is only a simple flow but for
William Wordsworth it has become the source of his happiness. The way he described that single
piece of thing boosted his inspiration and passion. This poem and romanticism could also be a
way to express his emotions during those times. I think between our lives it is really important to
somehow incorporate Romanticism because it helps people appreciate more of the simple things
we have everyday amidst the fast-changing events of the society, I think it is good to spare
sometime to sit and give complements to the things that helps us get through every day. It makes
people feel more grateful and learn to appreciate life itself.
