Part II. Problem Solving (40pts)

1. A mass weighing 12 pounds stretches a spring 2 feet. The mass is initially released from a
point 1 foot below the equilibrium position with an upward velocity of 4 ft/s.
a. Find the equation of motion.
b. What are the amplitude, period, and frequency of the simple harmonic motion?
c. At what times does the mass return to the point 1 foot below the equilibrium position?
d. What is the velocity of the mass at t = 3π/16 s ?
e. At what times is the velocity zero?

2. A free undamped spring/mass system oscillates with a period of 3 seconds. When 8 pounds
are removed from the spring, the system has a period of 2 seconds. What was the weight of
the original mass on the spring?

3. A 20-lb weight is suspended from the end of a vertical spring having a spring constant of 40
Ib/ft and is allowed to reach equilibrium. It is then set into motion by stretching the spring 2
in from its equilibrium position and releasing the mass from rest. Find the position of the
weight at any time t if there is no external force and no air resistance.
