For all the problems, be sure to write, line by line, the steps that you took to solve them. No
calculator is allowed in the test.

Warm-up questions are counted as 4 points each. Regular questions (problems 1 to 10) are
worth 10 points each. The two extra credit problems are worth at most 15 points each. Time limit:
60 minues.

Warm-up Questions. (1) Suppose a = d 1027e, and 2 = 2t . Find a and t.

Answers: a = ,t= .

Problem 1. Suppose f (x) is a polynomial, namely, f (x) = an xn + an−1 xn−1 + · · · + a1 x + a0 , for

some non-negative integer n and some numbers a0 , a1 , ..., an as its coefficients.

(a) Prove that f (1) = a0 + a1 + · · · + an−1 + an .

(b) Suppose f (x) = (2x − 3)5 and g(x) = (2 − x)4 , and suppose

f (x)g(x) = c9 x9 + c8 x8 + c7 x7 + c6 x6 + c5 x5 + c4 x4 + c3 x3 + c2 x2 + c1 x + c0
Find c1 + c2 + c3 + c4 + c5 + c6 + c7 + c8 .
