NZTA Driver Licence – Recognition of Prior Learning

Only Class 1 (car) licences issued since 27 February 2012 are covered.
Individual schools/tertiary education organisations (TEOs) can choose whether they report standards or
not. There is no expectation that schools/TEOs will provide opportunities for a learner to gain their
licence, though you may choose to do so.

The learner needs to print off the form from the NZQA website, complete the relevant sections and
present the form and original licence to the school or TEO.
The school/TEO needs to sight the licence, keep a photocopy, complete the form and keep the
evidence on file until the end of the next academic year.
The school/TEO needs to add the standards achieved to their entry file.
NZQA may periodically audit your recording process.

The illustrations are for licences issued after 24 November 2014

If the licence is a Class 1 Learner there will be an L next to the Class 1. If the licence is a Class 1
Restricted there will be an R next to the Class 1. (A green licence means the driver is fully qualified in at
least one class, a yellow licence means the driver is in the restricted phase for one or more class of
licence, a blue licence means the driver is still learning to drive for at least one licence class. The colour
does not just apply to the status of their Class 1 licence). The standards only relate to a Class 1 licence.
