SIMPLE LINE BALANCING EXERCISE

1. An industry that produces a single product has the following characteristics in a

production process. To produce it, four (4) machines are needed, one in each
workstation. The times are as follows:

Manual Time Machine Time

XWorkstation
(min) (min)
W1 2 4
W2 1 5
W3 4 8
W4 3 6

Determine the indicators of the production line.

a) Determine the indicators of the production line.

Task Time
Workstation
(min)
W1 6
W2 6
W3 12
W4 9

b) Draw the production line.

Longest Task
Time

c) Production:
 Production time per day: 8 hours.
 Cycle time (longest task time): 12 minutes/unit
 So, we can find the daily production:

Pt 480 minutes/day
P= = =40 unit /day
C t 12 minutes/unit

d) Idle time:
 Number of Workstations (K): 4
 Cycle time (C t ):12 min/unit
 ∑ t i=( 6 +6+12+9 ) =33 min
δ =( K ) ( C t )−∑ t i
δ =( 4 ) ( 12 )−33
δ =15 min/unit
e) Efficiency:
 Number of machines: 4 machines
 C t=12 min/unit
 T t=( 6∗1 ) + ( 6∗1 ) + ( 12∗1 ) + ( 9∗1 )=33 mins
33
E= x 100=68.75 %
(4)(12)
f) Relative work:
 W1 = 40 unit/day * 6 min/unit = 240 min/day = 1/2 day.
 W2 = 40 unit/day * 6 min/unit = 240 min/day = 1/2 day.
 W3 = 40 unit/day * 12 min/unit = 480 min/day = 1 day.
 W4 = 40 unit/day * 9 min/unit = 360 min/day = 3/4 day.
