Identify a research question in a journal article and discuss what
approach would be best to study the question and why?
My research question comes from the National Open University of
Nigeria Law Journal Vol 1. No.1. 2013. One of the articles in that journal is titled – Environmental Protection and Legal Regulation in Nigeria by Iroye Samuel. The research question I would like to bring out for a study limiting my scope to noise pollution is this - what impact has noise pollution caused by religious activities had on the residents in Akure, Ondo State? The approach I would use in attempting to get answers to this question would be the mixed methods approach. A pragmatic worldview would be adopted to tackle the issue, bringing out the consequences of these actions and proffering solutions. The exploratory sequential approach would be used for data analysis. A mixture of both quantitative and qualitative data gathering would be adopted. Interviews would be conducted with various religious leaders, especially churches and mosques to find out their views on noise pollution, all an interview with personnel of the ministry of environment would also be conducted. From their interviews, data would be analysed and findings noted. Questionnaires would also be drawn for selected residents who are affected by the effects of this noise. Their responses would be collated and findings drawn. The results of both the interviews and the questionnaires would be used to answer the above research question. 2. Take a topic that you would like to study and using the four combinations of worldviews, designs and research methods, discuss a project that brings together a worldview, designs and methods. Identify whether this would be quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods? Topic: The role of Broadcasting stations in the 2020 Endsars Lagos protest. A study like this would require a constructivist worldview approach. The reason for this is so we study and understand the role the media played during the protest. The qualitative approach will expose to us how youths are influenced by the television and radio broadcasts. Interviews with radio stations and focus group discussions with select youth groups will the data gathering. The data gathered will help us have and understanding of the roles of the media and help in suggestion policies and programs that can help the youth society in becoming less violent.
3. What distinguishes a quantitative study from a qualitative study?
Mention three characteristics.
a. Quantitative research focuses more on testing objectives theories
by examining the relationship among variables while qualitative research focuses and attempts to explore and understand the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social human problem.
b. Quantitative research makes use of close-ended questions in their
research methods while qualitative research uses open-ended questions when work on their research.
c. Quantitative research uses more of numbers and statistical
analysis to generate and test data while qualitative research uses a lot of words as they seek to explore the relationship between issues using more of textual analysis.
