Developing the ability to speak in Spanish for foreign students: A proposal
Introduction:
This proposal is intended to present the weakness of foreign students with their speaking skills in
Spanish. It will feature a list of some recommendations to help students to develop their speaking
abilities. Also, it will outline the reason to set up a Speaking program at the university.
Current situation:
A recent study conducted at the university revealed that foreign students show mastery of Listening
and Reading skills. On the other hand, more than half of them said that when they arrive in the
country it is difficult for them to communicate with native people and, therefore it is difficult for them to
make friends among other important activities inside and outside the school.

Needs to be addressed:
It is well documented that foreign students show difficulty in speaking, and this language barrier
interferes with their academic performance. It would make a huge difference if the school established
a program where cultural and linguistic aspects of Spanish are integrated to develop speaking skills.
In this way, students will develop good speaking skills to succeed in their classes, but also get a good
experience of the school and the country.

Final recommendations:

I would like to make the following recommendations:


● Invite foreign students who are starting at the university and those who are already enrolled in
a quick and informative seminar to introduce the course.
● Provide language assistance by teachers along with the university community, and some
useful language learning resources.
● Accompany the courses with activities where they face situations with native speakers.

If these recommendations are applied, foreign students will feel more prepared for their classes.
