Project Description:
Looking for candidates passionate about development and interested in assisting on projects at the
intersection of political economy and economic history in (but not limited to) Indonesia. Specifically,
due to the large amount of qualitative data, the projects require a proactive individual and quick
learner, who is meticulous, patient, has a keen eye for detail, and excellent data skills to work
independently/get off the ground running.

Specifically, the main project “Why Pay the Chief: Land Rents and Political Selection in Indonesia”
aims to answer questions on how higher village chief remuneration from tanah bengkok continues
to affect economic development and political economy outcomes in villages in West Java today.

Primary tasks at the onset will include, but are not limited to, assisting with data cleaning and
preliminary data analysis. Data cleaning tasks include (writing Stata code for) converting raw,
qualitative data collected from field surveys and archival records (in excel and Stata format) into
datasets useable for quantitative analysis in Stata.
