The International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering, IFMBE, is a federation of national and transnational
organizations representing internationally the interests of medical and biological engineering and sciences. The IFMBE is a
non-profit organization fostering the creation, dissemination and application of medical and biological engineering knowledge
and the management of technology for improved health and quality of life. Its activities include participation in the formulation
of public policy and the dissemination of information through publications and forums. Within the field of medical, clinical,
and biological engineering, IFMBE’s aims are to encourage research and the application of knowledge, and to disseminate
information and promote collaboration. The objectives of the IFMBE are scientific, technological, literary, and educational.
The IFMBE is a WHO accredited NGO covering the full range of biomedical and clinical engineering, healthcare, healthcare
technology and management. It is representing through its 60 member societies some 120.000 professionals involved in the
various issues of improved health and health care delivery.

We warmly welcome you to the European Medical and Biological Engineering Conference (EMBEC) and the Nordic-Baltic
Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics (NBC) held in Tampere, Finland, in June 2017! These two long
running conferences are now combined for the first time with aim to build a truly cross-discipline conference. With close to
500 accepted papers we believe that this task has been achieved. We aimed to present all traditional fields of biomedical
engineering, but also to highlight new emerging fields, such as tissue engineering, bioinformatics, biosensing, neurotech-
nology, additive manufacturing technologies for medicine and biology, and bioimaging, to name a few. Biomedical engi-
neering is developing and - similarly as medicine - the science of biomedical engineering is transferring from organs and body
towards cells, genes and proteins and on the other hand towards healthcare delivery with important aspect of health technology
assessment and clinical engineering and physics. Our selection of plenary and keynote speakers, as well as the topics of almost
50 special sessions and all the contributed papers also indicate this transition towards even more multi–disciplinary science.
Moreover, we also emphasized the role of education, translational research, and commercialization. With special pithing event
for the Finnish start-ups and broad commercial exhibition, we hope to achieve these goals as well.
The conference is endorsed by EMBEC society, EAMBES and IFMBE. We would like to give our sincere thanks for all
of them for the support on organizing the meeting and hope that same kind of collaboration will be available in coming
EMBEC meetings as well.
This proceedings published by Springer at IFMBE conference series contains the 4 page papers submitted to the conference.
The one-page abstracts are covered in separate proceedings that is available during the conference.
To achieve this proceedings book about 2000 colleagues have been active on writing and reviewing the papers, as well as
co-chairing the review process. Each paper has been evaluated by minimum of three specialists, who have spent enormous
efforts on the evaluation process. We would like to express our gratitude to all the organizers of the special sessions, authors
and especially the associate editors and reviewers who – despite the challenges of the online system - were able to ensure the
quality of the meeting and this proceedings.
We do hope that you as a participant of the scientific and social program of EMBEC & NBC 2017 find the event as
excellent platform for meet colleagues in this multidisciplinary area and to enhance knowledge and scientific achievements.
Welcome to Tampere in 2017!
