TOPIC 1-ACTIVITY 1
1. What is the function of the Deck Department?
The deck department is responsible for safely receiving, discharging, and caring for
cargo during a voyage. The ship's bosun, an able seaman (AB) day worker, and a
watchstander AB are seen here working aloft aboard a U.S. freighter to maintain
cargo rigging.

2. What does the deck crew conducts?

Generally, the deck crew conducts surface maintenance of the deck including its
fittings and equipment.

3. Who is the Executive Officer of the ship's Engine Department, and what does
he do onboard?
The engine department is headed by a Chief Engineer. He has other licensed
engineers to assist him with engine room watch and the performance of maintenance
and repair activities in the engine room.

4. What are the dutes of a seafarer?

Perform general maintenance, repair, sanitation and upkeep of material, equipment,
and areas in the deck department. Maintain ship's metal structures by chipping,
scraping, cleaning, priming, and painting. Clean, maintain, and repair the hull, decks,
superstructure, cargo gear, and smoke stack.

5. Who is Chief Steward and what is his job onboard?

A chief steward is the senior crew member working in the steward's department of
a ship. ... The chief steward directs, instructs, and assigns personnel performing such
functions as preparing and serving meals, ensuring that they are both delicious and
nutritious it supervises and coordinates activities of pantry, storeroom, and non-
cooking kitchen workers as well as purchases, kitchen supplies, and equipment.

6. What is a Shipboard Organization structure?

Ship-board organizational structure - Deck , Engine & catering department.
The ship's crews are the personnel who sail on board a ship and are responsible for its
operation, primarily when the ship is at sea (with some responsibility when at port). ...
Catering (steward's) department.
7. Who is the highest ranking officer onboard a vessel and what are his
responsibilities?

The captain or master is the ship's highest responsible officer, acting on behalf of the
ship's owner. Whether the captain is a member of the deck department or not is a
matter of some controversy, and generally depends on the opinion of an individual
captain. When a ship has a third mate, the captain does not stand watch.
The captain is responsible for the day-to-day affairs of the ship under his command. It
is his responsibility to ensure that all the departments perform to the requirements.
Therefore, the heads of the various departments answer to him. The captain represents
the owner and hence is called "master." The captain is officially not considered to be a
crew member, which seems to resolve the controversy mentioned above.

8. Who is the navigating officer onboard a vessel and what is his main duty?
A navigation officer, also known as a deck officer, is a vital member of the ship's
onboard management team ensuring the safety of the crew, cargo, passengers and
vessel both at sea and at port. It's a big responsibility. This is an exciting role where
no two days are the same.
At sea, the mate on watch has three fundamental duties: to navigate the ship, to safely
avoid traffic, and to respond to emergencies. Mates generally stand watch with able
seamen who act as helmsman and lookout. The helmsman executes turns and the
lookout reports dangers such as approaching ships.

9. Who is second in command and what are his main duties onboard.
The chief mate is the head of the deck department on a merchant vessel, second-in-
command after the ship's Master. The Chief mate's primary responsibilities are the
vessel's cargo operations, its stability, and supervising the deck crew. The mate is
responsible for the safety and security of the ship, as well as the welfare of the crew
on board. The chief mate typically stands the 4–8 navigation watch as OICNW
(officer in-charge of the navigational watch), directing the bridge team. Some crews
have additional Third mates, which allow the Chief mate to not stand navigational
watch, and focus more on cargo and deck operations. Additional duties include
maintenance of the ship's hull, cargo gears, accommodations, life saving appliances
and firefighting appliances. The chief mate also trains the crew and cadets on various
aspects like safety, firefighting, search and rescue, and other contingencies. The chief
officer assumes command of the whole ship in the absence or incapacitation of the
master.

10. Who is the head of engine room and what are his duties onboard?
The chief engineer on a merchant vessel is the official title of someone qualified to
oversee the engine department. The qualification for this position is colloquially
called a "Chief's Ticket".
The Chief Engineer, commonly referred to as "The chief", or just "chief", is
responsible for all operations and maintenance that have to do with all machinery and
equipment throughout the ship. He may be paid on par with the captain, and holds a
similar rank as the captain.
