Midterm Questions Instructions: Watch the movie entitled "Of Mice and Men" (1992) to
answer the given questions. You may read the subtitle to help you comprehend the line of the
story. Questions:

(1) Who was the woman in red running away in that prairie in the opening of the movie (see
picture 1)? From what she was running away?

Picture 1: A woman in red with torn clothing.

A young woman touched and held by Lennie, because Lennie likes to caress soft objects,
therefore, Lenny holds the woman's red dress. The woman panicked and screamed and
ran to the direction of the field
(2) Two men were running for their lives, and a band of search party was hunting them down
at the beginning of the movie. What your explanation for the two pictures?

Bot
h of them ran away from a group of seekers because Lennie was accused of attempting to
rape when he touched and held the clothes worn by a young woman
(3) How the two men or George and Lennie became a close friend, or they were becoming
travelling companions in the movie?
Because Goerge met aunt Clara first, Clara's aunt was the one who took care of Lennie
from little to big and after Aunt Clara died, George took care of, looked after and
accompanied Lennie. So that until they grow up and are looking for work they are always
always together.

(4) Why the bus driver dropped George and Lennie in the city, and he refused to take them to
the gate of the ranch of which the two men would find a job?

Because the farm is very far away and also because George and Lennie don't have money
to pay for the bus

(5) What made George (little) guy angry and upset to George (big) guy when they stayed at
the small creek at night before they met the boss in the ranch on the following day?
Actually George would never be able to be really angry with Lennie, because he already
considered Lennie to be his own sister, and Lennie also labeled George as his older sister.
When George is furious over Lennie's foolishness that always drags her to various
problems, George will say with annoyance that his life might be happier without him, and
if so, Lennie will only sulk funny like a kid, "George, you want me to go and leave you
alone? If you don't want me with you, I can go to the hill and find a cave. " At that time
Lennie drank too much river water, because she was afraid that Lennie would get sick
like last night, then when Lennie wanted to eat but only beans were available, George
didn't bring Lennie's favorite tomato sauce, and he felt guilty because Lennie wouldn't eat
without tomato sauce. . But finally Lennie said that he was just kidding.

(6) Why George asked Lennie to remember the place they were staying that night, and he
must go there, hide and wait for him if something wrong happens?
Because the place is considered safe and Goerge will meet Lennie behind the bushes if
something goes wrong

(7) Why George didn't let Lennie speak for himself when the boss was asking him some
questions?
Because George was afraid that if his boss knew about the mental illness suffered by
Lennie, if his boss knew that they would be fired
(8) Why Curley or the boss's son didn't seem to like Lennie when they met the first time at
the workers' room?
Because Curley does not have a big body so Curley hates people who are bigger than him

(9) Candy, or the injured worker on the ranch, told George and Lennie about Curley's secret,
that is, Curley's left hand was made soft with Vaseline. Can you catch what actually said
by Candy with that joke-softening his left hand? What was the implied message of his
cruel joke?
Candy said that Curley's left hand wrapped in gloves containing Vaseline, Curley
reasoned if he did that because he provided assistance that still felt smooth. However,
Permen said that it was funny because Permen thought that curley represented the mistake
of oppressing and torturing migrants in a different way ie not physically but verbally
manipulating

(10) Why Lennie's eyeballs as if as they would jump out of his eyes when he saw Curley's
wife for the first time? What made him so fascinated by that young woman?

Because the young woman looks very beautiful

(11) Why Slim, one of the workers on the ranch commented that there were no two guys
wandered together when he spoke with George at lunch time? Did he hint on something
when he said that?
Because Slim thinks that if two people wander together the possibility of people in this
world no one trusts one another, he might hint that a man should wander alone or if they
are together means something is happening

(12) The nameless character or referred only by Curley's wife seemed wanted to seduce
George when she approached him on the barn. What was her motive to do so?

Curley's wife did it because she wanted to tease George. But unfortunately George
already knew the motives of Curley's wife so he didn't pay much attention to it.

(13) Why Candy eventually let Carlson shoot his old dog, but later he regretted it?
Because He has been with his loyal dog for a very long time and he regrets that he didn't
shoot him

(14) What dream shared by George, Lennie and Candy that was shattered by the unwanted
death of Curley's wife?
Dream that tomorrow they will have their own piece of land and buy a farm

(15) What resembled by the killing of Candy's old dog and the killing of Lennie by
George?
Candy used to regret that she didn't kill her own dog, but instead let someone else shoot
her old and loyal pet. George decides not to make the same mistake Candy made by
letting others end a friend's life. Because of this, George shot Lennie out of loyalty and
love.

(16) What was the moral of this movie?

The moral message we can take from this film is that although this film was made during
the Depression, this film has great relevance for contemporary scenes. He embraced all
those whose dreams for a better life had been crushed by unemployment, low wages, and
fear of an even worse future. As the poet Langston Hughes understood, such worries are
spiritual matters. He observed wisely, "If the dream dies / Life is a winged bird broken /
That cannot fly

(17) What referred by "mice" in the title of this movie? In your interpretation, does this
animal symbolize something with regard to the main character's lives?
I love the title, 'Rats and Humans' which in English are written in plural form. Makes me
wonder about the purpose of the title. Is this a physical description of Geoge and Lennie?
The big Lennie was described as a human and the small George as a mouse. Or maybe the
title illustrates that rats and humans have a strange relationship, rats are annoying animals
and no matter how hard humans try to eliminate the rats, they are always there. Mice are
always troublesome to humans, describing a bad relationship

(18) What is your score for this movie (1 out of 5)? Please give your explanation for it.
The score I gave 4, the film is very good. There are so many life lessons that we can take
from this film. There are also many comedy scenes because of Lennie's innocence and
stupidity that keep us entertained. The flow is like going back and forth, making us guess
what really happened. Why not 5, because I personally don't like the scene of Carley's
wife being so sassy and overly seductive. But he is like that because he lives as the
character's role.
