B LEVEL SPEAKING PROJECT 

Choose ONE of the topics below and record a video of a pair discussion. Each student should
speak for at least 4 minutes. Therefore, the total length of the video should be 8-10 minutes. In
your discussion, ​interact with the other student by explaining your opinion about the topic. Give
specific details and examples. (100 pts.)

● What are some good ways to save money?

● What are some of the effective ways to be successful in exams at university?

● To what extent do you agree with the statement below?
“Attendance should not be taken in universities.”

Date of Submission: ​January 18, Monday in Week 7. Late submissions will ​NOT ​be graded by the
instructor.   

Task Requirements:  

● Each student is supposed to equally contribute to the discussion. No student should dominate
the discussion.
● If students utter memorized sentences from any sources such as the Internet, Wikipedia, or
read from their notes, they will automatically ​get a 0 from the task​.
● Students are supposed to sit facing the camera during the recording so that their faces could
be visible.
● The sound and visual quality of the recording should be good enough for instructors to
understand and hear the discussion clearly.
● The discussion is supposed to be recorded on Microsoft Teams by students.
● In each pair, students will choose a person to act as the Group Captain. This person will be
responsible for creating a meeting group, recording the discussion, and sending the video link
to the instructor.
● The responsible student (Group Captain) first will create a meeting group and share its link or
code with the other group member.
● Before the discussion starts, the responsible student (Group Captain) will start recording the
discussion.
● After the discussion is over, the responsible student (Group Captain) will download the
recording of the discussion and upload the file on Google Drive. Then, he or she will share its
link with their instructor via email.
● Students are supposed to write their group names and names of the students in the pair in their
emails to the instructor. Emails received without the names of all students will be returned to
the sender. It will not be graded until all of the names have been stated in the submission
email. The second submission (resubmission) must be received by the stated deadline or it
receives an automatic 0 grade.

 
Instructor Duties: 

a. Assign the task on December 23, Wednesday in Week 3 the latest.  


- Do ​ NOT ​change the project topics and task requirements under any circumstances.
- Go over the project topics and task requirements together with the students.
- Go over the speaking rubric with the students after setting the project task.
- Instructors can ask the students to form their own groups or they can group the students using
Random Group Generator​.
- Encourage students to use the ​newly learnt vocabulary​as well as the ​newly learnt/revised
grammar structures during the period​.
- Encourage students to use ​turn-taking expressions​to agree/disagree/interrupt, etc. in their
discussion.
- Remind students that late submissions will ​NOT​be graded and students will ​get a 0​if they
submit their recording after the due date.
