I will keep saying that light is as material as stone.
But due to the fact that it is free, many architects
simply forget about it.
P.M.M.: Let us talk now about the weight, the
techtonical element, affected by gravity and its
close relation to the light stereothomical element.
The discourse of both rrealities has been a key
part of your architecture. The Olnick Spanu House,
for instance, has materialized that task of building
a hut on a cave. It is the logical order, Nature.
Almost quoting Abbot Laugier, the built-up work
justifies Nature in a clear attempt never to belong
one to each other. What do you think about the
ongoing attempt to alter this order in contemporary
architecture? Those materials present in your work,
do they belong to the aforementioned order?
A.C.B.: There is no transgression because that is
not the only principle. The idea of the hut on the
cave is surely valid, but not compulsory. Gotfried
Semper talks clearly about this topic, about the
techtonic and the stereotomic element. Kenneth
Frampton picks it up and widespreads it. And I have
applied it to some of my works. And I have written
about it. But, again, there is not only one unique
truth about architecture.
But I do believe that there is a certain trend in
contemporary architecture that aims at making
the important structures lighter. I have written
about it in the text “On Elephants and Birds” that is
compiled in my last book Principia Architectonica.
And Foster summarizes it better than me in the
question that Fuller asked him and that titles that

building weigh, Mr. Foster?”
F.G.M.: Conscious thought establishes the idea
and the drawing of the idea allows the information
stimulated from the straight perception of
architecture so that the latter and its representation
offer the right information on its different qualities
from the configuration between what is real
and what abstract or imaginary. Between the
architectural drawing and architecture itself there
lies a thought turned into image and taken to a
paper through the staging action of the architect.
How much magic is there in the architectural
drawing, capable of producing an architectural
drawing, i.e., architecture itself, on a simple
piece of paper?
A.C.B.: Going back to the drawing, obviously
