Quiz no. 9 – (educ202)

Solve the problem with complete solution. (30pts)

Problem:
A survey was conducted to determine whether sex and age are related among
Stereo shop customers. A total of 200 respondents was taken and the results are
presented below:
Age/Sex Male Female Total
Under 30 60 50 110
30 and over 80 10 90
total 140 60 200
Instructions: Conduct a test whether sex and age of stereo shop customers are
independent at 1 percent level of significance.

ANSWER:

Step 1. Define null and alternative hypothesis

Ho: The sex and age of stereo shop customers are independent.
Ha: The sex and age of stereo shop customers are NOT independent.

Step 2. Level of Significance

α = 0.01 or 1 percent

Step 3. Test Statistics

Formular for Chi-square
Where,
O = observed counts
E = expected counts
Given:
Age/Sex Male Female Total
Under 30 60 50 110
30 and over 80 10 90
total 140 60 200
Solution:

Step 4. Degree of freedom

df = (r - 1) (c – 1)
df = (2 – 1) (2 – 1)
df = 1

Critical Value = 6.63

If x2 is less than the critical value, accept the null hypothesis
If x2 is greater than the critical value, reject the null hypothesis and
consider the alternative hypothesis.

Step 5. Conclusion
Based on the result, x2 is greater than the critical value, therefore we
reject the null hypothesis and accept the alternative hypothesis that the
sex and age of stereo shop customers are NOT independent.
