- The Elephant Man , Characters

- Dr Frederick treves, is a doctor from the London hospital (jospital), he finds and helps the elephan Man called (Sir
Joseph Merrick)
- Simon Silcock, Mr Silcock is the shopkeeper, he has the elephant man and charges so (souu,cobra) that people can see
the creature (criechor) as he says (ses)
- Silcock charged two pence and the Dr treves paid twelve pence
- The elephant man, Sir Joseph Merrick at the beginning of the book, was a very dirty man, who scared (squeret) people
by his appearance (apirians), he looked ugly.(agly)
- He looked very big because he had a lot of skin and bumps on his skin, he was wearing old underpants, but without
(wirout, sin) a shirt, coat or shoes. his head was very, very big, like a huge (jiug) bag with many books inside. his head
didn't have much (mach)hair on it, and there was another bag of dirty dark skin on the back. This skin went down
below his neck, one of his eyes was not visible (vaisibol), because a lot of skin also went down in front of his face and
he had a huge tooth his left hand was beautiful and normal, he spoke slowly, his voice is strange (streinch)
- merrick is twenty-seven years old
- He was not a creature (criajiur) or monster, he was just a man with a malformation
- his mother left him at Mr Silcock's shop
- Joseph had a picture of his mother, she was beautiful and kind (kaind)
- Dr Treves (trif) felt sorry for Joseph when he saw him in those conditions
- He asked the shopkeeper to take him to the hospital to see him
- They took him to Joseph in a cab, it was difficult to get him up because he could (cud) hardly(dura) walk(wok), and he
did not (didn’t) want to be seen because he scared people, so they covered him with a coat and a big hat. the doctor
gave (geif) him his card.
- the doctor examined (examineid) him and returned (ritorn) him in a cab
- Merrick came back (keimback) to the hospital, some policemen took him away, because Mr Silcock left him in Belgium
when they gained (geind) 50 pounds.
- Carr gomm the director of the hospital wrote (rout) a letter (lerer) to the editor of The Times, to tell the story of the
elephant man, to ask for financial help because the hospital could not take care (teik quer) of him.
- then The Time readers contributed (contribiut) with fifty thousand pounds
- with that money the hospital would always take care of merrick,
- They gave Merrick two rooms and gave him books, that was his first (ferts) home, he no longer smelled ugly.
- Merrick was very fond of books, ´first the bible (baibol) and newspapers after love story books.
- then a new nurse freaked out when she looked at him
- Merrick became sad and wanted to go (gou) living in a lighthouse for the blind (blaind) so that no one would see him.
- One day a young and beautiful lady (leiri) went to see him and she was friendly and smiled (smailed) at him, Merrick
cried for five minutes (miniuts) of happiness because no woman had spoken to him like that or smiled.
- the young lady and a friend brought(traer) him more books
- Merrick was visited (visirit) by very important people like Queen Alexandra of England, she read about (abaut) him in
the newspapers, and visited him very often, and sent him letters and Merrick too, the queen was his friend
- the letters were trusted between both
- when merrick went to see a play at the theater he was fascinated with the countryside and wanted to go there
- in the countryside he was in a hut (jut) and a peasant (pisant, campesino)brought him food, there were hardly any
(eny) people
- Merrick was very happy there he looked at animals like birds, he wrote letters to Dr. Treves about everything he saw
and sent him flowers.
- One day Dr. Treves found Merrick dead, Merrick could not lie(lai) down to sleep normally because of his big head, and
one night he slept normally and his neck was broken by the weight of his head.
- 4 years later (leirer), the hospital director sent the last letter to The Times to announce (anouns) the news of Merrick's
death and to thank for all.

- This story is based in real life!

- For me , this is a interesting story…. I think it is a sad story, even Merrick has a good life to end.

the story is about a man, the elephant man or Joseph Merrick, who has a malformation in his body, and lives very sad
and bad. Once a day, Dr. Treves finds him and helps him. After Merrick's life changes, he is famous because the readers
of The Times help him, and important people like the Queen of England visit him. In the end, Merrick dies.
