Case summarize:
On Command Organization (OCC) is the world's driving supplier of room interaction
entertainment, data and commerce administrations for the settlement industry. Company
annually serves more than 250 million visitors through 950,000 rooms in around 3,450
property of the hotel. OCC has rights to let audiences watch recently released movies and
sell it to hotels or guests by cooperating with other vendors and distributors. The company’s
main profits are from adult movies which takes up to 80% of the revenues generated in 10
years. A recent change in management of OCC is also deciding ways to make more money
as adult movies are becoming more and more profitable. However, three cases lately have
raised questions about the genuine nature of the company’s products as well as ethical issues.
The first case is about a male senior adult film editor, Ted Jones, who has been accused of
sexual harassment by several female colleagues. Due to lack of evidence, they were told to
avoid Ted Jones. However, the situation keeps happening again and an investigation has
been conducted.
The second case is about Donna Wilson, a female administrative assistant. She was furious
about the movies’ content being shown at office as they promote sexual harassment and
women degradation at workplace. She also stated that OCC did not fully explain the
sexuality of the products when they offered her the job. She accused the supervisor of putting
pressure on her after she threatened to file a lawsuit and constantly upsets her in front of
other employees.
Lastly, since OCC’s products are not family-friendly for hotels as they do not fit their image
and demand censorship, which drops the revenues of OCC.
Liberty Media (OCC’s parent company) has held a meeting asking how to maintain as an
entertainment company that still sell pornographic contents and how to avoid sexual
harassment at workplace when editing internally and to protect female workers. The
disclosure of most profitable products is still in discussion.
Case Analysis:
For the first situation which are involved when several female employees
complained to their superiors about feeling uncomfortable in the presence of a
certain male colleague, Ted Jones, because of what they say are “lewd” remarks
about woman. Some info about Ted Jones:

 A senior adult film editor whose job it is to edit adult films to reduce graphic
sexual content
 Ted defended himself by denying the allegations.
 Due to lack of proof, Ted was given a warning and the women who filed the
complaint were told just to avoid Ted whenever possible.
 After more complaints are filed, HR department has decided to conduct an
investigation.

Assume the investigation has been completed, there are 2 possible outcomes:
Outcome 1: Sexual harassment is identified. In term of evidence, we suppose that
private emails was existed, and Ted indeed sent bunch of those kind of emails to
femail colleagues.

 Even though OCC is providing services to an adult film firm, it is unacceptable

that OCC’s employees should be mistreated.
 HR department should report to counterparty firm
 If this continues, it is necessary to levy a fine to Ted Jones as a consequence
for misconduct. Moreover, if the status was serious, OCC should definitely fire
Ted as it is unacceptable to the existence of sexual harrassment in company
environment.

Outcome 2: Employee retaliation is identified. As far as we are concerned, Ted

should have showed actions that was not been accepted by female colleagues.

 There is a chance that some female employees are trying to frame/ downplay
Ted Jones. (evidence is that Ted denied his allegations)
 HR should interview the female employees who have previously filed a
complaint to Ted.
 If that was the case, HR will put a warning to those employees for unfair
retaliation.

In term of second situation, which was related to Donna’s complaints about the way
she treated. The person of interest of top priority here should be Dona Wilson.
Considering that she had complained twice, and the situation is matched with the 1st
case, there are two possible cases here :
Outcome 1: Donna is trying to catch attention as she was not heard earlier (no
action taken for the adult content).
Outcome 2: Indeed,Donna is truly being victimized.
Now as the new manager, you should first conduct a one to one session with Donna
and other employees, and after thorough investigation, you should be able to decide
which of the above is true.
Now if 1st point is true, Donna should be counselled by a professional counselor
explaining the kind of industry she is working in and these things are quite normal in
the adult industry.
If the 2nd point is true, there should be a second round of investigation dealing with
the concerned male employee as to why he is trying to target her. If charges are
found to be true, a warning should be issued to the supervisor.
In either case, before coming to a concrete conclusion, a thorough investigation is
required.

For the last situation, we should first consider whether adult videos an
entertainment. Indeed, pornography is one type of entertainment, because
entertainment is defined as films, music, etc. used to entertain people; and the video
the company produced is just another type of movie. According to this situation, we
rose 2 questions:

1. Ethics in the adult industry and whether the company is masquerading as an

entertainment when it's actually producing adult film. Since pornography is
one type of entertainment as we mentioned, OCC should disclose all
bussiness information of the company due to integrity and independence.
2. Whether editing adult film making the sexual harassment worse.
Long-term business strategy

 Disclose all offered products to the public. Although the adult film industry
is a sensitive issue to some people, it is wise to let the public know the source
of OCC’s revenue.
 Build a business model for the company:
o Target customer segment
o Competing companies
o Describe the market need and opportunity (Think of hotel rooms as
complementary goods; combining with the growth of THAT industry)
o Show the intended allocation of capital for each specific activity.
