Master DATA

In SAP PP
Master Data
What is Master Data ??
Master data is a unique set of data that can be used in Production Planning.
Master data is central data for all processes.
Master data do not change regularly.

There are five main master data objects related to SAP PP

1. Material Master
2. Bill Of Material (BOM)
3. Work Centers
4. Routing / Task List
5. Production Version
Material Master
>> The material master contains information about the materials that a company
constructs, procures, manufactures, stores, and sells.

>> Material can be a finished product, such as a product or article, a semi-

finished product, such as a subassembly, or a raw material, such as a purchased
part.

>> For each material of a company, a material master record is created, which is
identified by a material number, a material type and industry sector.

>> Role of a Material Master in Production Planning is Material Requirement

Planning (MRP1, MRP2, MRP3 and MRP4 views) and Work scheduling view

>> For the company, the material master record is the central source of data.

Material Master
Various departments in a company work with the same material, and each
department wants to store different information on the material. To address this
requirement, you can subdivide the material data as per the department to which
it belongs, and every area of responsibility can have a material view. In this way,
each department has its own material record view and is responsible for the
correctness of the data.

Bill of Material (BOM)
>> BOM is a complete list of materials with quantity, which will be used in
production.

>> The list contains item number, description, quantity, unit of measure, valid
from date and valid to date, etc.

>> BOM is divided in BOM Header and BOM item.

>> Role of a BOM in Production Planning is Material Requirement Planning

(MRP), Product costing, Material Consumption.

>> Types of BOM are

Simple BOM,
Multiple or Alternate BOM (technical type ‘M’),
Variant BOM (technical type ‘V’)

>> Material Master records must exist before BOM.

Work Centers
>> Work center is where a particular operation is executed.

>> Work center is a location that defines when and where production resources
are required according to order requirements.

>> Work center can be defined as individual or multiple machines, people, tools,
and so on.

>> Role of a work center in Production Planning is Capacity Calculation,

Scheduling of an Operations/Orders, and Calculate Operation Costs.

Routing
>> Routing defines a list of activities/operations in a sequence that are required
to be performed.

>> Routing describes a production cycle.

>> Each step defines the work center in which specific work is accomplished.

>> The routing stores the planned time for each operation as standard values
and forms the basis for the following:
● Where is the work to be carried out ?
● How long should the work take ?
● What materials does each operation need ?
● What tools and fixtures are required ?

Production Version
>> SAP production version is a combination of a bill of material and routing.

>> Production versions can be maintained through the material master or using
the production version mass maintenance transaction C223.

>> For a given product, there can be different components that can be used to
manufacture. When there are such substitute components, it is possible to create
an alternative BOM in SAP. There can be multiple alternative BOMs for a given
product. Like multiple BOMs, there can be different methods or tasks which can
be used to manufacture a product. These different methods or sequences of
activities can be maintained as alternative routings or routing groups.
SAP production version is used to group these different combinations of BOM
and routings so that depending on the material availability and the resources,
production can be carried out for those materials.

>> Production version is accessible from MRP4 view.
