AEFESL302: Assessment 1 Listening to a

lecture

What you need to do


Before you begin this assessment, you should complete Topic 1

There are 3 audio files attached to this assessment.


You are only allowed to listen to the audios 3 times so prepare by reading the
questions first.
Make sure you have a quiet environment with no interruptions. Listen to the audio the
first time noting as much as possible. The second time you listen you should try to fill
in the gaps. Use the third time to check your answers and make any corrections
necessary. Remember you can pause the sound file at any point.
You are required to sign at the bottom of the assessment to say that you have done
the work yourself and only listened to each sound file three times.
This Assessment has three parts.
In Task 1 you will answer questions concerning the structure of a lecture and make
notes identifying how lecturers help students to identify main points.
In Task 2 you will listen to some extracts from the Study Skills Talk 1 and listen for the
purpose, main ideas and semantic markers.
In Task 3 you will listen to a talk on Effective listening skills and then make notes.

Task 3 - Listen and take notes


Now listen to this extract from a talk on Effective listening skills, produced in a series of
seminar talks as Training Resources for Teachers.
Play the extract Factors Affecting Listening (A1_Factors affecting listening) and write a set of
notes.

Before you listen:


 Decide on a format for your note taking
 Jot down a few things you think the lecturer might say on the topic.

As you write:
 Use headings and point form
 Remember to leave white space for later additions and comments.
 Use abbreviations

After you listen


 Review your notes
 Make sure they are legible
 Check that they make sense
 Mark points you don’t understand.

You may also want to:


 Underline or highlight key points
 Write key words in the margin
 Write short summaries in the margin
 Comment on the points the lecturer made.
