01 NAMEPLATE – The newspaper name, found on the front page.
02 Masthead – The names of the publisher, editor and other executives.
03 Flag – The name of the paper as it appears on the front of the paper.
04 Broadsheet – Larger of the two types of newspaper. An example would be the New
York Times.
05 Tabloid – This size of newspaper is half the size of a broadsheet.
06 Ears – The white space on either side of the flag.
07 Skybox – A promotional box above the flag.
08 Staff Box – This includes the names of the editors, a phone number and the statement
of policy.
09 Column – A vertical division of the layout.
10 Subhead – A headline directly under the main headline.
11 Kicker – A short headline above the main headline.
12 Brief – A short tiny story.
13 Sidebar – A secondary story that gives additional information about a major story.
14 Breakout – This is a box that gives just the main highlights of a story.
15 Byline – The name of who wrote the story.
16 Dateline – This appears at the beginning of the article that tells the location of the
story.
17 Pull Quote – A short sentence or phrase pulled from the story and set in larger text.
18 Refer – Tells the reader about a related story inside the paper.
19 Jump Line – A line at the bottom of an article that tells the reader where to go to read
the rest of the article.
20 Copy – A story or body copy
21 Feature – A human interest story.
22 Folio – The page number and date on each page.
23 Cutline – Also known as a captain. Tells what is going on in a picture.
