How to make your own ‘mezuzah’

The special reminder on your door

You need
 Smarties tube packet (empty!) with lid or something similar
 White or coloured paper
 Coloured pens
 Glitter
 Glue

How to make your mezuzah

1. Use the smartie packet or similar item to make the mezuzah case.
2. On the front of the packet near the top cut a small window.
3. Cover the packet in white or coloured paper so that you have a mezuzah case all in one colour.
4. Now choose coloured pens to add on your designs and words to the case. You can
copy the Hebrew from another mezuzah or you could write in English. Remember to
draw symbols that are important to you and which show what is inside and to make
the case beautiful and special by using lots of colour and glitter.
5. When you have finished making your mezuzah case you are ready to make the parchment that goes inside.
6. Cut a strip of paper so that it is a small oblong shape.
7. In your best handwriting write a prayer or a promise that you want to keep onto the paper. Be careful not to
smudge the ink!
8. When you have a perfect piece of parchment roll it carefully into a tube
shape and place it inside the mezuzah case.
9. Line up the parchment so that you can see it in the window you cut into the
mezuzah case. On this piece of parchment you can see in the window write
a key word. This word could be to tell you what’s inside, it could be your
name or it could be the word ‘prayer’ or ‘promise’.
10. Close the lid on the mezuzah case. Your mezuzah is now finished and ready to be put on your door.
Did you know… a mezuzah is put on the door posts of a person’s home. Some Jewish people put a mezuzah on every
door of their home, while some people only put the mezuzah on their front door.
