Design Project
Due: 18/01/2021 14:00

WARNING: Cheating and copying somebody else’s program during the exam may result in
losing full credit for the exam and it may also lead to a disciplinary investigation.

Important Rules:
1. For this project (exam) you should submit your report as a pdf file. The name of the fle should
include your name, last name, and your ID number separated with underscore character(e.g.
Name_LastName_1111111111). You are expected to submit this pdf file the UES web page of
the course before the deadline.
2. Exam should be submitted to the UES page. Submissions via e-mail should be made only if
loading problems occur on the UES page. In that case the e-mail should be sent in the first five
minutes after the deadline. Points will be cut off from late submissions via e-mail. 2 points per
minute will be cut off for the first ten minutes after five minutes after the deadline, 3 points per
minute will be cut off during the next ten minutes, and 5 points per minute will be cut off during
between the 20th and 30th minute after five minutes after the deadline. In the case of late
submission via e-mail the time I received the e-mail will be considered.
3. If you submit via e-mail, it would be your responsibility to be sure that I received it.

Consider the pipe system shown in the figure. Pipes have constant diameter. Water at 80 oC is going be
transferred from reservoir A to reservoir B, which are very large. There is a pump in the system denoted
with a circle and a valve denoted by a hexagon. The pipes AB and CD makes an angle of 45 o with the
horizontal. The pipes have well-rounded inlets and exits at their connection to the reservoirs. Suppose
that for the day time (assumed to be half of the day) the volume flow rate will be V̇ , however at
night time this flow rate will be reduced to its 1/3rd value using the gate valve shown in the figure. The
water levels in each reservoir is h1 and h2 , respectively with respect to the datum shown. The lengths of
pipes AB, BC and CD are LAB , LBC and LCD , respectively. For the given volume flow rate, select a
suitable pipe diameter, pipe material, pump and valve type so that the initial investment cost would be
minimum. According to your selections determine how much electrical energy (in kWh) will be spent
each day. Also, check for the possibility of cavitation in the system. If it exists discuss the potential
measures that could be taken to avoid it. Clearly explain the steps you followed to make the initial cost
minimum. Are you going to operate the pump at the same rpm at nigh and day? Explain.

With the materials you selected what would be the total cost if the reservoirs were connected with the
shortest possible pipe.

You should explain the details of your calculations and selections in your report. Reports should
include a small Introduction section followed by a Theory section which contains the basic theory. A
Results and Discussion section should follow which contains the calculations, selections and the
corresponding discussions. The report should also include a Conclusions and References sections. For
the geometrical properties check the parameters file.

You can make reasonable assumptions and approximations. However, you should clearly state them.
Applying assumptions without mentioning them may lead to point reductions.
