Unit code and name: MEE502: Underground Power System Design

Assessment #: 3A

Assessment type: Project Report

Weighting: 35%

Total marks: 125 marks

Please complete your answers on the assessment cover page document available on Moodle.
Clearly label your question numbers (there is no need to copy the full question over). Include all working
out.

Task:
At a mine processing site, a new process section requires power that will be by an underground
service. It will be fed by a 1.0 MVA 22 / 3.3 kV transformer with fault current of 11.7 kA.
The load is approx. 800 kVA, 3.3 kV, 140 A 3-phase mixed load (service transformer, motors,
harmonic loads, etc.). Expected utilisation is 70% with a 0.8 power factor.
Cable route (refer to sketch):
A – B: 650 m in made up soil from substation cable trench to point B, 110’ turn.
B – C: 100 m in virgin clay soil and 110’ turn.
C – D: 150 m inlet crossing, trench and surface lay with tidal considerations.
D – E: 150 m in made up soil and 45’ turn.
E – F: 50 m under roadway crossing, basic rock-built road, heavy truck traffic.
F – G: 50 m under railway crossing, HD mineral trains, State owned.
G – H: 60 m overhead cable tray.
H – I: Indoor cable tray to switchboard.
Cable route length from A to H is 1210 m.

Questions:
1. For each of the segments on the drawing, state the best choice of cable with respect to design
and suitability and give your reasons for that choice. (20 marks)
2. Using the cable tables provided in the notes (SA), along with installation standards (such as
AS3000, AS3008, AS 2678), Perform sizing calculations for the selected type of cable. What
are the factors that influence derating of the cable? Provide the assumptions made in the
sizing and derating of the cable. Based on a cable with a copper conductor and cable depth of
1.5m. Determine the conditions and cable criteria for each of the segments above. Draw up a
specification and plans for this cable installation. Where ‘wiring rules’ compliance is required,
state so (for instance, minimum depth for HV cable). (25 marks)
3. Calculate voltage drop in the cable. (20 marks)
4. Check whether the cable can withstand fault current for a fault occurring at the end point of
the cable. Provide the assumptions made in the calculations. (20 marks)
5. Provide man holes along the cable route and indicate these in the drawing. Provide reasons
for the selection of locations of the spacing of the manholes. (10 marks)
6. What are the factors influencing the location of the manholes? (10 marks)
7. What are the factors influencing the size of the manholes? (10 marks)
8. Assess the pulling tension to be taken into consideration on the cable during installation.
What measures can be taken up to control the pulling tension during installation? (10 marks)

• Provide your answer in your own words in the form of a report. The report should have
sections on: methodology, implementation/ evaluation, verification/ validation, conclusion/
challenges and recommendations/ future work.
• The report should be a maximum of 1,000 words (no less than 100 words and excluding any
appendix or bibliography/reference list).
• You must specifically follow critical referencing and paraphrasing requirements. Refer to
your Student Homepage for details.
