Electrical Installation Design Assignment 2023

Course: Electrical Engineering

Course Code: ELE4116

Due Date: Monday 20th November 2023

Presentations: 10:00am – 1:00pm
Report by COB

Assignment Description:

The goal of this assignment is to apply the principles of electrical engineering to design a
comprehensive electrical installation for a residential building. You will be tasked with creating a
detailed electrical installation plan, including the selection of components, wiring diagrams, load
calculations, and safety considerations. This assignment will help you develop practical skills and gain
a deeper understanding of electrical installation design.

Assignment Tasks:

1. Site Analysis (10 points) a. Choose a residential building of your choice (e.g., a house,
apartment, etc.) and provide a brief description of the structure. b. Perform a site analysis to
determine the electrical load requirements, taking into account the size of the building, the
number of rooms, and the types of appliances that will be used.

2. Load Calculation: a. Calculate the total electrical load for the building, considering both
lighting and power requirements. b. Determine the peak demand and diversity factor. c.
Create a load schedule that specifies the load for each area or room within the building.

3. Electrical Distribution Design: a. Select the appropriate voltage level for the building's
electrical supply (e.g., 120/208V, 277/480V, etc.). b. Design the electrical distribution system,
including the selection of transformers, switchgear, and distribution panels. c. Develop a
single-line diagram illustrating the electrical distribution system.

4. Lighting Design: a. Choose lighting fixtures and sources that are energy-efficient and suitable
for the building's purpose. b. Calculate the lighting load and design a lighting layout,
considering illumination levels and uniformity. c. Specify any lighting control systems, such as
occupancy sensors or dimmers.

5. Power Outlet Design: a. Determine the number and location of power outlets required in
different areas of the building. b. Design a power outlet layout and circuiting, ensuring
compliance with electrical codes. c. Specify any special requirements for outlets, such as
GFCI protection.

6. Safety and Backup Systems: a. Include safety measures, such as emergency lighting and exit
signs. b. Design a backup power system (e.g., generators or UPS) to ensure continuity of
critical operations in case of power outages.

7. Cost Estimation: a. Provide a detailed cost estimate for the entire electrical installation,
including materials and labor. b. Consider the overall budget for the project and propose
cost-saving measures, if necessary.

8. Documentation: a. Prepare a comprehensive report that includes an executive summary,

introduction, methodology, findings, and conclusions, as well as all your design calculations,
drawings, and specifications. b. Include a bill of materials (BOM) listing all electrical
components and equipment needed for the installation.

9. Presentation: Create a 10-15 minute presentation to summarize your design and findings.

Submission Guidelines:

1. The assignment report should be typed in a standard font (e.g., Times New Roman, 12-point)
and formatted in a professional manner.

2. Include references to any codes, standards, or sources used in your design.

3. The report and presentation should be submitted by the due date mentioned at the
beginning of this assignment.

4. You may work in groups of 3-4 students. Clearly mention the names of all team members in
the report and presentation.

5. Each member shall be involved in making the oral presentation.

6. All reports and presentations should be submitted only to: gb.assignments@gmail.com

before the deadline. Submissions to any other emails will be disqualified.

Grading Criteria: Your assignment will be assessed based on the following criteria:

• Accuracy and completeness of load calculations.

• Clarity and correctness of circuit design and wiring diagrams.

• Appropriateness of component selection and justification.

• Thoroughness of safety considerations.

• Realism and accuracy of cost estimation.

• Overall quality of the report and presentation.

Important Note: Be sure to cite your sources if you use any reference materials for this assignment.
Plagiarism is not acceptable. Your design should be original and tailored to the specific needs of the
chosen building.

Good luck with your electrical installation design assignment! If you have any questions or need
further clarification, please don't hesitate to reach out to the Lecturer.
