KH5029EXQ: Civil Engineering Project 2
3. Interpret and provide contractual solutions based on the relevant industry standard contract
documents
5. Based on engineering principles produce and present (in relevant format) a preliminary design
solution to a civil engineering project, including design calculations, sustainability analysis and
environmental considerations
KH5029EXQ
Introduction
A new residential/commercial complex in the greater Cairo area, Egypt is under development as part
of a new community expansion – see Figure 1 below. As part of the design team, you were assigned
the following Civil engineering tasks responsible for completing the project. Planning permission has
been granted on the condition that the whole development integrates the concept of sustainability
and enhances the environmental quality of the site. Similarly, it is a requirement that the development
is sensitive to the location and has a high aesthetic quality.
Assigned tasks:
2. Transportation
a. Develop a contour and 3D elevation surface using the provided point elevations.
b. Create an alignment for the surrounding external road with its offsets and check the designed
alignments according to the appropriate code.
c. Show all the necessary labels and tag tables for the designed alignments.
d. Create a profile for both the existing ground and proposed design profile, showing all
necessary labels for the stations and curves. Also check the designed curves according to the
appropriate code.
e. Construct a corridor with the needed subassemblies, surface and calculate the cut and fill
quantities.
f. Produce alignment and profile drawings and create a video for the corridor.
g. Specify the major and minor roads and design the appropriate sight distances needed.
h. Illustrate the intersection conflict points and design off/on street parking spots with all the
needed alignments and marking suitable for the intended vehicle capacity.
3. Hydraulics:
a. Use software tools to design and simulate the water network of your dedicated area. Include
the planning of a loop/grid network, calculations of the discharge, reports that justify and
prove that the flow velocity is within the safe ranges and obtaining the diameters for each
pipeline.
b. Design the plumbing system for the assigned multi-story building. This includes planning the
feeding supply water pipes, as well as grey and black water from bathrooms, kitchens, and
any water-needing facilities. It also includes the choice of diameters for all pipes. A clear floor
plan and sectional elevation riser diagram should be provided to show the plumbing
installations needed with special fixtures, valves, and diameters.
c. Design an irrigation system that will reuse grey water collected from buildings for green
areas. This includes planning a tree network, calculating the discharge, checking the velocity
of flow within the safe ranges, and obtaining the diameters for each pipe.
d. Designing two pumping systems for both the water supply and irrigation systems. This
includes the calculation of losses/heads, as well as the power and number of working and
standby pumps required.
KH5029EXQ
Pass requirements:
Each assessment component must be at least 40% and Module Mark must be at least 40%. You must
pass each individual coursework (and the presentation) to pass the module. Failure in a single piece
of coursework, requires you to resit that piece of coursework. For the re-assessment of this module,
you should improve your initial attempt to a satisfactory level using the feedback provided. Your resit
attempt should address all feedback comments.
Required Units:
All units must be as follows.
Forces kN
Moments kN.m
Area Loads (dead and live load) kN/m2 (kPa)

Presentation (25%) – 15-minute individual presentation plus 5 minutes Q&A
Due date: Week 13 (expected 60 work hrs)
You are expected to present your PowerPoint slides and Poster from CW4. Your poster design must
be submitted with CW4 as PDF size A0 (1189 mm x 841 mm) and printed as a physical hard copy to
be presented during your individual presentation.
Prepare a 15-minute individual presentation outlining the following aspects of the project:
Presentation instructions:
We want you to do your best in each assessment. However, we know that sometimes events happen
that are either beyond your control or not easy to predict which mean that you will not be able to
submit your coursework by the deadline. If this happens, you can apply for an extension to your
assessment deadline. If you need longer than the maximum two-week extension, you can apply for a
deferral, which takes you to the next assessment period. You must apply for an extension or a
deferral before the assignment deadline given as part of the assessment instructions. Late requests
are rejected.
Information about the process and what is/is not considered can be found on our policy website
page (https://tkh.edu.eg/policies/) and the ‘Extenuating circumstances policy’. Please note that your
module teachers are unable to give extensions.
Late or non-submission
If your assignment is submitted online please do not leave it until the last minute to submit. Aim to
submit several hours prior the deadline, in case you have any technical problems submitting. If you
fail to submit work for the module or submit an assessed piece of work late without an agreed
extension, you will receive a mark of 0% for that piece of work, even if it is only a few minutes late.
You will however be eligible for a re-sit attempt at the next available assessment opportunity where,
if you pass, your mark will be capped at 40%.
If you fail the resit assignment, or do not hand in any submission, you are allowed one further resit
attempt at the assignment. After a second failed/non-submitted resit attempt you will have failed
the module. This may have an impact on your ability to progress on your course and/or on your final
marks for your degree.
Academic Misconduct
Academic misconduct covers any action by a student to gain unfair advantage (e.g. extra marks) for
her/himself, or for another student, in their assessed work. It not only damages your personal
reputation, but also the reputation of the entire university, and it will not be tolerated at The
Knowledge Hub Universities. There are severe penalties for students who are found guilty of
academic misconduct ranging from obtaining a mark of 0% for the piece of work concerned, through
to exclusion from the University.
Many modules require you to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the work of others
(artists, makers, practitioners, academics, designers, performers, etc.). It is vital that you make it
absolutely clear when you are using work from other sources, and that you reference it clearly and
correctly. If you are unsure how to reference, please speak to a tutor for clarification.
For full details of what constitutes academic dishonesty and how to avoid it, please see the section
in the Student Handbook, available on Moodle and the TKH policy web pages.
