KH5029EXQ Project Brief

Module Delivery
The client is the author of this brief (the Module Leader). The client will operate a Frequently Asked
Questions sessions where you will be able to ask questions and seek clarification regarding the
client’s brief and requirements. The client’s team of technical experts will take the role of
consultants/ Senior Engineers who will be able to offer professional advice and support to you. The
client’s input must be considered and therefore any requested input from the technical experts should
be regarded as their professional opinion. They may provide guidance in various ways that may
include a pre-recorded briefing and series of key resources on Moodle. Each week, you will have 6
contact hours with them: two hours of lectures on theory and four hours of studio/lab support in
their areas of specialisation through timetabled sessions. They will provide support out-of-
timetabled hours via office hours only.

Aims and Summary

The aim of this project is to apply core civil engineering theory to a 'real' civil engineering project,
demonstrating the link between theory and applied practice. This will incorporate theory previously
learnt and applied practice taught through the module supported by examples of industry practice.

Introduction
A new residential/commercial complex in the greater Cairo area, Egypt is under development as part
of a new community expansion – see Figure 1 below. As part of the design team, you were assigned
the following Civil engineering tasks responsible for completing the project. Planning permission has
been granted on the condition that the whole development integrates the concept of sustainability
and enhances the environmental quality of the site. Similarly, it is a requirement that the development
is sensitive to the location and has a high aesthetic quality.

Extensions and Mitigating Circumstances

We want you to do your best in each assessment. However, we know that sometimes events happen
that are either beyond your control or not easy to predict which mean that you will not be able to
submit your coursework by the deadline. If this happens, you can apply for an extension to your
assessment deadline. If you need longer than the maximum two-week extension, you can apply for a
deferral, which takes you to the next assessment period. You must apply for an extension or a
deferral before the assignment deadline given as part of the assessment instructions. Late requests
are rejected.

Information about the process and what is/is not considered can be found on our policy website
page (https://tkh.edu.eg/policies/) and the ‘Extenuating circumstances policy’. Please note that your
module teachers are unable to give extensions.

Late or non-submission

If your assignment is submitted online please do not leave it until the last minute to submit. Aim to
submit several hours prior the deadline, in case you have any technical problems submitting. If you
fail to submit work for the module or submit an assessed piece of work late without an agreed
extension, you will receive a mark of 0% for that piece of work, even if it is only a few minutes late.
You will however be eligible for a re-sit attempt at the next available assessment opportunity where,
if you pass, your mark will be capped at 40%.

If you fail the resit assignment, or do not hand in any submission, you are allowed one further resit
attempt at the assignment. After a second failed/non-submitted resit attempt you will have failed
the module. This may have an impact on your ability to progress on your course and/or on your final
marks for your degree.

Academic Misconduct

Academic misconduct covers any action by a student to gain unfair advantage (e.g. extra marks) for
her/himself, or for another student, in their assessed work. It not only damages your personal
reputation, but also the reputation of the entire university, and it will not be tolerated at The
Knowledge Hub Universities. There are severe penalties for students who are found guilty of
academic misconduct ranging from obtaining a mark of 0% for the piece of work concerned, through
to exclusion from the University.

Many modules require you to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the work of others
(artists, makers, practitioners, academics, designers, performers, etc.). It is vital that you make it
absolutely clear when you are using work from other sources, and that you reference it clearly and
correctly. If you are unsure how to reference, please speak to a tutor for clarification.

For full details of what constitutes academic dishonesty and how to avoid it, please see the section
in the Student Handbook, available on Moodle and the TKH policy web pages.

KH5029EXQ Civil Engineering Project 2

Design of Steel Structure

Figure 1

A commercial strip is to be constructed over a rectangular area of (B x L), with spacing (S)
between trusses. The main system of the building is made up of steel trusses supported
by steel columns on the outer perimeter as shown in Figure (1). The roof structural system
is steel deck supported on the trusses. The mezzanine floor system is concrete slab on
steel deck supported by steel beams as shown in Figure (1).
Note: Each student will find his/her dimensions shown in the list of student data.
KH5029EXQ Civil Engineering Project 2

Given data:

• Thickness of concrete slab = 100 to 120 mm

• Floor cover = 1.50 kN/m²
• Live load = 3.00 kN/m²
• Weight of steel deck = 0.15 kN/m2
It is required to:
1- Draw complete general layout (plan, sections..., etc.), showing the different
bracing element and plan of mezzanine floor. (Scale: 1:100 or 1:200)
2- Calculate the loads acting on truss joints due to dead and live loads. Show these
loads on a neat sketch.
3- Calculate the maximum force affecting all truss members due to dead and live
loads. For simplicity, you may assume that the main truss is simply supported on
the exterior columns and use methods such as method of joints or sections to
determine the required forces in the truss members.
4- Design single or double (back-to-back) steel angle sections for tension and
compression members based on the forces calculated in (3).
5- Design and draw to scale 1:10 bolted connections for the members enclosed by
dotted rectangles A & B. [Use non-pretensioned bearing type bolts (grade 4.6)]
6- Design and draw to scale 1:10 alternative welded connections for the members
enclosed by dotted rectangles A & B.
7- Design suitable steel IPE sections for intermediate secondary beam and main
beam assuming that both beams are simply supported. Design for bending, shear,
and check deflection.
8- Check the design of C1 column IPE section provided below under axial load due to
the roof truss and mezzanine floor.
