Technical Building Proposal | Due 16th December 2021 at 2:00 pm | vs. 30/11/2021 11:20

1. Introduction and Aims of the Task

This task involves writing a short technical proposal report that requires you to:
a. review a given building scenario;

b. propose construction methods that are appropriate for that situation;

c. draw technical details that graphically represent the proposed solutions; and

d. defend and explain the reasons for your choices.

The analysis, technical detail component and proposal report, together serve as the
Component B final piece of coursework for the module, which accounts for:
40% of the module mark.
You will be assigned a specific site, which is determined by the final digit of your UWE student
number (see pages 8 & 9).
Students should anticipate that a significant amount of time will be required for the reading,
preparation and writing related to this coursework submission (between 18 and 30 hours total).

2. Overview of the Task and Scenario (Domestic Building)

A builder is proposing to develop a series of small housing estates on four (4) different sites
throughout the UK. Each site will include 24 versions of the same, standardised detached
house design, with identical floor plans, wall specifications and structural loading.
All information related to the specific building sites and important house specifications is
included in Appendix A, attached to this brief.

2.1 The task

For your assigned site, you are required to produce a Technical Report and Proposal where
you:
1. Review the specific conditions presented by that site and specify an appropriate set of
construction solutions for both the foundations and ground floor assemblies that can
be used for all 24 houses on the proposed development.

2. Defend and justify all of your technical choices with regards to the specific
characteristics for your assigned building site.

3. Provide at least one technical section detail that graphically displays the junction
between your proposed floor assembly and foundation designs within the specific
context of the assigned site.

2.2 Written Proposal Component (40/100 marks)

The written portion of the technical proposal shall clearly identify and discuss:
1. The important, specific characteristics of the site’s soil composition and how they have
influenced the final technological choices.

2. The proposed construction methods for the foundation and ground floor, including:

a. The foundation specification, giving a clear indication of:

i. the specific form of strip foundation (common strip, deeper strip, trench fill);

3
UBLMYS-30-1 | Construction Technology & Services 1
Technical Building Proposal | Due 16th December 2021 at 2:00 pm | vs. 30/11/2021 11:20

ii. the founding depth (ground level to underside of the foundation);

iii. the width of the foundation; and

iv. the thickness of the foundation.

b. The ground floor specification, including a clear identification of the broad choice
of floor (suspended or ground bearing), and all specific materials and components
that are further required to provide a complete floor assembly, including the interior
finish (not just the proposed structural method).

i. Include reasoning for the positioning of key components including insulation

and any required membranes/barriers.

ii. Consider ventilation and other services requirements within the foundation and
ground floor systems.

c. The co-ordinated final solution clearly indicating how the resulting foundation and
floor assembly choices have been determined in relation to each other and as part
of an overall solution that best suits the specific site scenario.

You must ensure you have included supporting commentary and justification for each of the
broad choices of construction for the foundations and the ground floor; clearly explaining the
key reasons for your decisions and how the general soil profile from the site, building
regulations and established methods of ‘best practice’ have influenced each choice.

2.3 The Required Format

The complete analysis and proposal shall be written as a report, formatted using appropriately
numbered headings for each of the sections. Your report should include an introduction, a
main body of content and a summary/conclusion.
The written proposal shall be provided on up to three A4 sized pages, using a minimum 11pt
font size to a maximum limit of 750 words (± 10% or 75 words). The report can be
illustrated, as long as it does not exceed the three pages.
Submitted work that exceeds the word limit will still be accepted, however:
• Module tutors may cease reading any material that goes beyond 825 words, thus any
additional commentary may be excluded from the final assessment.

Further information on UWE’s word limit policy can be found by clicking on this link (Ctrl+Click):
http://www1.uwe.ac.uk/aboutus/policies.aspx
2.3.1 Referencing
The written proposal shall include appropriate citations and referencing using the UWE
Harvard referencing system. Hence, please consider:
• Any specific detailed data, statements and facts which are not a result of your own
discovery or personal research, must be appropriately sourced and referenced
otherwise the work can be considered as plagiarism.

• The UWE Harvard Referencing system is the required method of referencing at UWE.
The following link provides support and explanations regarding this approach.
http://www1.uwe.ac.uk/students/studysupport/studyskills/referencing.aspx

A concise bibliography shall also be provided on a separate page. (References and

bibliography are not included in the word count.)

2.3.2 Further Guidance

Guidance on writing style, document formatting and approaches towards the written
component of this report are provided within Appendix B (B3. Writing Style: Tips and
Recommendations), which is attached to this document.

2.4 Technical Detailing Component (40/100 marks)

The technical detail(s) provided must clearly represent the same, specific solutions that are
proposed within the written content. A minimum of one (1) single detail shall be provided on
A3, or A4 sized paper (or grid paper) – this is in addition to your three-page report. The detail
must meet the following requirements and standards:
1. The detail shall include:

a. The proposed foundation and all portions of it below ground, down to the founding
depth (use break lines if required).

b. The completed ground floor assembly,

c. The exterior wall to at least 250 mm above the proposed ground floor level.

d. For suspended floor assemblies, the section should cut across the supporting
joists / beams (rather than parallel to the supporting floor structure).

2. The drawing should be a fully annotated, hard-lined (drawn with a ruler) and originally
crafted technical construction detail. This shall include appropriate drafting expression
and noticeable line weight contrast.

3. The detail should be hand-drawn, but may also be CAD produced. However:

i. students should be aware that only hand drawing techniques are being taught
as part of this specific module, thus if CAD or other digital drawing formats are
used, specific support and assistance with your chosen software is not
provided by the module team.

ii. where CAD has been used, a digital copy of the drawing file will also be
required for submission and this file will be checked using plagiarism detection
software.

iii. you must still include a PDF of the ‘printed’ image of your detail and a .dwg
file. If you do not include both of these files your mark will be penalised.

4. Scale: 1:5, or 1:10 as suits your choice of paper. The indicated scale relates to your
actual and original hand – drawn scale, digital scanning for uploading the submission
will adjust this somewhat, which is acceptable.

5. The scanned copy of your drawing must be clear; shadows across the page should be
avoided and the lighting must be even. The drawing should be cropped to include only
the extents of the paper, editing out any backgrounds or paper bindings. Where
necessary, the final image should be adjusted and improved to achieve a professional
and clearly presented drawing.

2.5 Digital Submission Dates and Procedures

2.5.1 Submission Date and Time
The completed Component B Technical Building Proposal is to be submitted online through
Blackboard prior to 2:00pm on Thursday 16th December, 2021.

2.5.2 Submission Extensions

This assessment has a three-day (calendar) grace period in which you can submit your work
without penalty. This means that the last date for submission without penalty or applying for
Reasonable Adjustments (RA) is on Sunday 19th December 2021 prior to 2:00pm.
While students are expected to plan their work so that they can submit on time, if you are
experiencing difficulties which will affect your ability to submit your work by the published
deadline the University allows a three-day grace period in which you can submit your work
without penalty for this specific assessment.
Please note that the submission deadline at the conclusion of the three-day grace period is
absolute and based on UWE server time. Please also note that this may fall at a time when
there is no IT support, therefore you are strongly advised to submit work well ahead of the end
of the three-day grace period because if it is uploaded beyond 2pm it cannot be marked.
For full information please see: Assessment support options - Academic information | UWE
Bristol.
• A student for whom 3 days is not enough can apply for a further 4 days (making a 7-
day extension in all) but you have to do this 5 days before the published deadline
and have to supply evidence.
• Students who come under the disability act can OPT for a 14-day Reasonable
Adjustment.
For more information on how to apply, please refer to: Assessment support options - Academic
information | UWE Bristol.
2.5.3 Submission Procedures
This Coursework Element shall be submitted electronically and uploaded through the
Blackboard online submission system, in the ‘Assignments’ area found in the left-hand margin
of the module Blackboard page. The final report should be uploaded as a set of separate files,
including:
1. one (1) PDF document containing all of the written content of the report. This may have
been produced in MS Word, but it should be saved/ exported as a PDF for the
submission.

2. one (at least) additional .pdf or .jpeg digital file with a high-resolution scanned version
of your original graphic technical detail(s).

- If manual or hand-drawing methods are used, students shall complete the original
details and then scan them to create a digital version for uploading. Students will
need to retain their original hand-drawn details for potential review by the Module
tutor if requested.

- If CAD or electronic drawing methods are used, students shall submit PDF files of
the printed output of each detail AND a digital copy of the electronic drawing file
used to produce the details. (as per Section 2.4 above, if files are missing, penalties
will be applied).

Each individual file must be less than 25MB in size. Please compress photographs if inserting
them into your document.

2.5.4 Advice when using Blackboard

• Students are advised to ensure that they allow appropriate time for uploading their
completed work.

• Students are able to upload on multiple occasions prior to the submission date, but
each new upload must be a complete submission.

6
UBLMYS-30-1 | Construction Technology & Services 1
Technical Building Proposal | Due 16th December 2021 at 2:00 pm | vs. 30/11/2021 11:20

• The file folder for your submission is formatted such that each new upload over-rides
the previous. Thus, you cannot upload one file then add the second later.

• BOTH / ALL files need to be uploaded in the final procedure in order for it to be a
successful submission.

2.6 Evaluation criteria

This coursework element will be assessed in relation to a number of different criteria, including
the quality of analysis, the effectiveness of the proposed technical solution, graphic detail
drawing ability and the co-ordination and consistency of ideas and commentary.
Detailed grading criteria are described on the table Coursework Evaluation Criteria which is
provided in Appendix C (attached to this document).

Appendix A | Support and Resource Material

A1. Domestic Building Scenario
A builder is proposing to develop a series of small estates housing estates on four (4) different
sites throughout the UK. Each site will include 24 versions of the same, standardised
detached house design, with identical floor plans, wall specifications and structural loading.
The builder is proposing to use the same specification for each house on every site.

1. House Design & Construction particulars

The exterior walls for each house are proposed to be constructed using a 327.5mm masonry
cavity-wall with full fill insulation as follows:
• 102.5mm brick external leaf

• 125mm, full fill PIR insulation (Xtratherm CavityTherm CT/PIR)

• 100 mm lightweight concrete block internal leaf (Forterra aircrete 600 to 800 kg/m3)

327.5 mm total
Internal finish: 12.5 mm Gypsum-based plasterboard (8 kg/m2) mounted on dabs
of cement, nominal 8 mm.

2. Preliminary Loading
Initial loading that needs to be accommodated by the foundations for each proposed house
has been calculated at 28.4 kN / linear meter.
a. **This excludes any loads from the ground floor assembly that may be applied to the
exterior walls and subsequently, to the foundations. Thus, the loading of the
foundations will vary depending upon whether the ground floor system is a ground-
bearing floor or a suspended floor.

b. Ground-bearing floor slab systems will have no additional impact on the foundations
(foundation loads remain at 28.4 kN / linear meter).

c. A suspended floor system using traditional pre-cast concrete beams and blocks will
increase the load on the foundations by 2.6 kN / linear meter (foundation loading total
= 31 kN / linear meter).

d. A suspended floor system using pre-cast concrete beams and with insulating
polystyrene-foam floor blocks will increase the load on the foundations by 1.6 kN /
linear meter (foundation loading total = 30 kN / linear meter).

e. A suspended timber flooring system will increase the load on the foundations by 1.2
kN / linear meter. (Foundation loading total = 29.6 kN / linear meter).

3. Specific Assigned Sites

There are four (4) different sites where proposed housing estates are to be built. Each student
shall use the site that corresponds with the final digit of their UWE student number. The
characteristics of the sites are:

a. Each of the four sites is very level, with minimal changes in gradient and slope.

i. All of the proposed houses will be able to be constructed within an isolated plot/
footprint, each with a consistently level grade for each proposed building site.

b. Assume that there is a low or negligible radon risk for ALL proposed sites (discussion
of radon risk or design detailing to account for higher radon levels is not required for
this report).

c. The particulars for each specific site are outlined in section A.2 below.

ii. Topsoil for each site has already been removed. For purposes of the report,
make all references to final founding depth of your proposal in relation to the
listed ‘0’ level of the sample provided.

Appendix B | Strategies for Executing Coursework 1

B1. Approaching the Task Appropriately
In order to successfully execute the tasks related to this coursework submission, students are
advised to do the following:
1. Review the details introduced in the lectures, tutorials and assigned reading as a basis
for the common forms of foundations and ground floor construction that might be used
on your assigned site.

2. Taking the location and the soil composition conditions for your specific site; propose
standard choices of construction for the foundations and ground floors to be used
throughout the estate.

a. Choices shall include founding depth and width of the chosen foundation and
relative height of the finished ground floor.

b. Use the extracts provided from UK Approved Building Regulation documents,

(as part of Appendix A, attached to this brief), to assist you with these
decisions / choices.

3. Develop a typical cross-section through the foundations and the ground floor to show
all of the significant construction elements in your chosen technical proposal.

a. Avoid generic representations; and do not just simply replicate ‘common’ or

‘generic’ details from texts, lecture slides or online.

b. Ensure that the detail shown is responsive and illustrative of your specifically
assigned site (soil types, depth etc.)

B2. Core Reading and Further Investigation

In order to be successful with this task, you will need to complete all of the core reading
associated with the lectures and tutorials within the ‘Work Below Ground’, ‘Ground Floor
Construction’, ‘Exterior Wall Construction’ and ‘Language of Construction Drawings’ units of
the module.
1. The core reading is indicated on the Reading list and within the weekly announcement
on the module Blackboard page.

2. In addition to the core reading you should also access and download the following
documents from the Construction Information Service through the UWE e-Library:

a. Building Regulations Approved Document A

b. British Standards Document BS8103.

B3. Writing Style: Tips and Recommendations

In order to be successful with this task, you will need to consider the following:
1. The written length of the coursework is quite limited and requires the writer to be very
concise and direct in approaching the task.

12
UBLMYS-30-1 | Construction Technology & Services 1
Technical Building Proposal | Due 16th December 2021 at 2:00 pm | vs. 30/11/2021 11:20

a. Be efficient in your writing; avoid irrelevant discussion and reporting about

specific aspects of foundation design and ground preparation that are not
related to your proposal.

b. Focus specifically on outlining the tasks, making proposals and defending

them.

c. This is not an essay about all of the available choices for foundations, or ground
floors.

d. This is meant to be a technical proposal where data and information is to be

read, absorbed, interpreted and then used to make decisions in relation to the
specifically assigned scenario.

e. Avoid repetition and redundancy in your commentary.

2. This is a professional style, technical report. Adopt an academic writing style that
avoids extensive use of the first person.

a. Examples:

“My design”, “I decided”, etc.,

• This type of commentary does not represent an appropriate academic or technical

writing style.

• The use of the ‘possessive’ (my) can also come across as being arrogant and directly
possessive of the work itself. This is not an approach that is often well received by
clients who are paying for the project.

‘The recommended solution for this scenario is (…) and this is based upon.’
• This approach is better, as it removes personal connection from the task, and implies
that data and analysis and careful thought have been applied, rather than personal
choice and preference and indicates a credible source that further backs up your
decision.

b. Write from a position of acquired knowledge and assume that your audience (a
builder) has appropriate knowledge related to various soil types as well as
common forms of foundations and ground floors.
