1. MODULE OVERVIEW
Project work is essential to work studied in Mechanical Engineering Design I. The student
hand in a report & presentation upon completion of the project. Both the project report &
presentation must be based on the layout provided.
T3-MARK = (10% X 1st draft report) + (50% X final report) + (20% X presentation) +
(5% X student peer review participation) + (15% X student participation on ethuto
discussion and shared documents)
T3 mark contributes 35% of the course mark. The student must obtain a minimum of
50% for the Project mark (T3) for admission to the main assessment.
The submission dates are provided in the weekly study schedule and ethuto calendar.

2. S1 2024 DESIGN PROJECT TOPIC
The AAC workshop manager requires a rolling machine table for students to use when
bending sheet matals of up 2 mm thick. The figure 1 below show similar machine however,
the manager would like different possible concepts. The manager indicated that all the
components such as motor, gearbox and belt drive should be mounted to the table. The table
structure should be made up of trusses. The list below shows some of the component's
specifications to be taken into account when doing the design:
• The motor and the gearbox are bolted to the tabletop.
• The weight of the motor is 47.6 kg (3kW single phase)
• Gearbox type is reduction spur gearbox with 118.2Kg
• Develop arc welding techniques for the truss members to table structure (show the
weld joint on the drawing)
• Selection of bolt
• Selection of material
• The belt drive is about 92kg
• When doing force analysis on the trusses, consider the static condition and the total
load is applied to each truss member with frictionless joints.
The manager insisted on the following design considerations: safety, functionality, weight,
aesthetics and ergonomics.

The following design aspects indicated in Table 1 must be covered; use standard components where possible.
5. WEIGHT
(Consider minimum weight, as the table should be easy to carry).
