EDA ENGINEERING ASSIGNMENT COVER SHEET

Title: Electromagnetic Compatibility examples class

Module: EENG6710 Product Development (EMC)
Work Setter: Dr Robert Horne
Assessment: This assignment contributes 6.66% of the module.
Deadline: Submission deadline: Noon 26th Nov
Marked work return date: 17th December
Submit: Online Moodle Submission
Intended This assignment contributes to the assessment of the EENG6710
Learning learning
Outcomes: outcomes:
8.2 Demonstrate an understanding of Electromagnetic Compatibility:
EMC Requirements, Test methods and the European EMC Directive

Feedback Feedback will be via:

method: i. Model solution on Moodle;
ii. Verbal comments in class;
iii. One-to-one feedback will be available on request.

You are reminded of the University rules on Academic Integrity as stated in the student handbook.
Examples of conduct regarded as a breach of these regulations include:
• Plagiarism: reproducing in any work submitted for assessment or review (for example,
examination answers, essays, project reports, dissertations or theses) any material derived
from work authored by another, without clearly acknowledging the source
• Duplication of Material
• Conspiring with others to reproduce the work of others without proper acknowledgement,
including knowingly permitting work to be copied by another student
• Falsification of data/evidence.
Please note that IET accreditation requires that when coursework contributes 30% or more of a
module then credit cannot be obtained if either your coursework or examination scores are more
than 10% below the module pass mark. This is irrespective of your module overall mark.

Marking Criteria

This assignment will be marked against a model solution which will be made available with
the returned work. The marks awarded will be consistent with the scores indicated in the
assignment sheet. In general, marks may be lost for work which does not show the full method,
include the correct units, or is poorly structured and difficult to follow.
Additionally, in design based questions you should consider the most appropriate unit
prefixes and the number of significant figures to use for results. You could also provide sketches
of your final designs, and suggest nearest preferred values for components.
If assumptions are required, you should state them and justify why they are appropriate. If the
work asks you to comment on the final result you should make an appropriate conclusion.
Electromagnetic Compatibility
Assessment Assignment 1

1. With reference to the 3-part EMI model, identify the principal part addressed when
implementing each of the following:

(i) surrounding an EMI-affected circuit with a metallic screen;

(ii) using high-threshold digital-logic in a sensitive circuit;
(iii) increasing the distance between an EMI source and an affected device;
(iv) reducing the power of a radio transmitter;
(v) inserting a filter in a cable

2. A plane electromagnetic wave has an electric field (E-field) strength

of 15 V m-1. Determine:

(a)  the magnetic field (H-field) strength;
(b)  the E-field strength expressed in dBV m-1.

3. An electromagnetic wave, having a frequency of 400 MHz, an E-field strength of 25 V

m-1 and an impedance (ZW) of 5 , strikes a shielding layer having an intrinsic
impedance of 0.05 . Assuming the absorption loss of the shielding layer is negligible,
calculate:

(a)  the reflected E-field strength (ER);
(b)  the transmitted-through E-field strength (Et );
(c)   the maximum screening effectiveness (S) of the
shielding layer if a narrow, 200 mm long slot, is cut in it.

4. At a particular frequency, a 0.60 mm thick metallic screen has a skin-depth () of 60 m

and a reflection loss (R) of 150. Determine at this frequency:

(a) the screening effectiveness of the metallic screen in dB;
(b) the transmitted-through E-field strength (Et ) if an
incident wave has an E-field strength of 114 dBV m-1.

5. A screen, having a Reflection loss of 20 dB and an Absorption loss of 10 dB at 100

MHz, is located 5 m from a 2 cm radius conductor loop that carries a signal current of
7.5 mA at a frequency of 100 MHz. Determine the maximum electric field strength
transmitted-through the screen (Et) resulting from radiated emissions emanating from
the conductor loop.
