Aim:

The aim of this assignment is to design a multi-stage operational amplifier in closed-loop

configuration capable of driving a 50 pF and 80 Ω load in parallel based on appropriate TSMC
0.18 μm CMOS process. The amplifier must achieve the following specifications:

1. Supply voltage 𝑉𝑉𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷 ≤ 1.8 V

2. Total DC power consumption 𝑃𝑃𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷 ≤ 50 μW
3. Open Loop Gain 𝐴𝐴𝑉𝑉 ≥ 42 dB
4. Open Loop Bandwidth ≥ 70 kHz
5. Closed Loop Gain 𝐴𝐴𝑉𝑉,𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶 ≥ 3 dB
6. Closed Loop Bandwidth ≥ 8 MHz
7. The biasing circuit must be designed using current mirror.

Tasks:

Students are required to complete the following tasks:

1. Identify suitable topology of the multi-stage CMOS amplifiers based on the above
specifications and perform necessary calculations based on the designed amplifier.
2. Evaluate the designed circuit using SPICE simulator. Perform relevant simulations such
as DC analysis, transient response and AC analysis.
3. Investigate advanced circuit architectures to enhance the performance of an amplifier (i.e.
achieving the required gain with lower DC power consumption) with insightful
explanation, calculations and simulation results.
4. Conclude on the overall work carried out in this assignment with relevant analysis, along
with detailed applications and discussion.

Assessment Criteria [100 Marks]

1. Topology Identification and Analytic Calculations [30 Marks]

2. SPICE Simulation Results [25 Marks]
3. Investigation in Enhancing the Performance of the Amplifier [20 Marks]
4. Discussion and Conclusion [25 Marks]

APPENDIX A

General requirement on Report

• All information provided must be straight to the point, precise and all information must be
accordingly cited and well presented. Avoid plagiarism.
• The report must be formatted with a font size of 12 pt, Times New Roman and 1.5 line spacing,
and page numbering at each page (Page X of Y). Please ensure the paragraphs are properly aligned/
justified.
• There should be List of Tables and List of Figures after the Table of Content.
• The report should be in chapters/sections and the structure should not go beyond the second level.
Instead of adding subsections at the third level you may use bullets if required.
• All figures and tables must have a title and referenced, if any. The caption font size must be in
Times New Roman, 10 pt and the position must be centre aligned.
• In the Discussion section you should give an overall appraisal of the results of your work. It is here
that you will have the best opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the work and to give
a critical account of what has been achieved.
• The Conclusion is a short summary of the results of your work (< 300 words) and self-contained,
i.e., it should not make reference to any sections, figures, or references in the report.
• All references to books, papers, and other publications must be fully and correctly quoted to be
useful to the reader.
• Follow the 7th Edition American Psychological Association (APA) referencing style:
https://library.apiit.edu.my/apa-referencing/
• The report to be submitted online.
• Plagiarism:
o A student has reproduced another’s work (including from another
student/blogs/publications/etc.) without citation and referencing.
o A student has reproduced another’s work extensively, but with citation and referencing
(student is expected to paraphrase when quoting another’s work extensively instead of
reproducing word-for-word).
• Non-plagiarism:
o Report template – eg. “Table of Content”, “List of Tables”.
o Aims, Objectives, Problem Statement.
o "General term"
