Design of the Hang Glide - CAD Software

Scenario

Design Engineers play major roles in all industries. The students are given this assignment,
so that they can learn about the different components present in the Hang Glide and their functions.
By doing research on the Hang Glide each student can incorporate their design and make flying in
all climatic conditions. Creative thinking and innovative ideas are required to build a Hang Glide
which can be safe and highly sophisticated for flying to be used by people of all age. The Hang

Glide must be able to carry a person from a higher location to lower plains. Designing must be done
so that a person can land safely on plains while using the Hang Glide. A pictorial view is shown in
the figure below for reference.

Figure 1

Task

 The model of a Hang Glide has to be designed according to the workspace shown in Figure
2. The Hang Glide size can be smaller than the workspace but it should not exceed the
workspace size (i.e., length – 5meters, width – 2meters, height – 1.5meters).

 In figure 1 an example has been given for your reference and by using your own imagination
or creates a Hang Glide with different components.

 Search at the minimum of seven different components for Designing in your Assignment.

 Design each components using Solid works software with your own dimensions.

 After designing the different components create the orthographic views and the Isometric
view for each component as well.

 An assembly and exploded view of the file must be made to show the inner components of
the Hang Glide.

 A final render of the 3D model must be shown with proper Bill of Materials and Ballooning
effects.

 Incorporate at least three different ideas that can be done when compared with the existing
one.

Note:
Use your knowledge and creativity ideas in developing the Hang Glide with safety that can
work during all climatic conditions.

Given below is the maximum work space for the structure and the design should not exceed
these limits.

Abstract

The abstract provides a brief overview of the substance of the report; usually no more than half a
page. It is not an introduction to the topic. The abstract should outline all the key features of your
report, including the topic, what you did and how you did it, and the main outcomes of your work.

The abstract:

 states the topic of the report

 outlines your approach to the task if applicable
 gives the most important findings of your research or investigation, or the key aspects of your
design

Introduction

The introduction provides the background information needed for the rest of your report to be
understood. It is usually half to three-quarters of a page in length. The purpose of the introduction is
to set the context for your report, provide sufficient background information for the reader to be able
to follow the information presented, and inform the reader about how that information will be
presented.

The introduction includes:

 The background to the topic of your report to set your work in its broad context
 A clear statement of the purpose of the report, usually to present the results of your research,
investigation, or design

 a clear statement of the aims of the project

 Technical background necessary to understand the report; e.g. theory or assumptions.

All figures, tables and equations must be labelled properly.

The Report format (5 %marks - Individual component)

The Report format shall be prepared according to the standards given.

Hang Glide Components identification (10% marks – Individual

component)
In this section, you should explain the details of the Hang Glide structure and identify the safety
components required inside Glide.
Identify types or classify safety measures to be implemented in the Hang Glide, detailed explanation
of the input medium, the output that is received and the arrangements of different equipments and
shape of the each component incorporated.

Design of Hang Glide Components (5% marks – Individual component)

In this section, you should explain the details of the components used in Hang Glide by stating its
functions, specifications, features and provide an alternative system to ensure advance safety for the
users.

Design conceptualization (5 % - Individual component)

In this section, you should perform brainstorming with existing Hang Glide and incorporate at least
three different components to enhance the features of Hang Glide. List the ideas with a brief
description and simple sketches. Draw proper sketch to illustrate your idea as detail as possible. No
dimension is needed at this stage. For the three different components do the sketches with the best
design and explain the main features for incorporating in the design. Specify the advantages and
disadvantages of the chosen components.

Engineering Drawing (25 % - Group component)

In this section, you should design all main components needed and involve in the Hang Glide as
engineering drawing with detailed dimensioning using standard symbols representation. The
drawing should show 3 views together with an isometric view of the design. Indicate only the
important dimensions of the drawing.
The drawing should contain all the details with indicating possible tolerances, type of material or
sectional view and surface roughness. Enclose your engineering drawing within a drawing border
which includes a projection symbol that accords with international drawing standards and contains a
title block with the component name, part number, your name and the date.

Assembly drawing (25 % - Group component)

In this section, you should produce an assembly and an exploded view of the assembly drawing by
showing how the parts are assembled by including the bill of material, and balloon annotations.
Enclose an assembly drawing within a drawing border which includes a title block, product name,
your name, the date, and information according to international drawing standards.

Discussion (5 % marks - Individual component)

This section should be written after the Design and Assembly. In this section, you state your
observations and findings during the Hang Glide design. You should discuss why there is any
discrepancy between your modelling and the standard one. Finally you are required to give
suggestions / recommendations for the improvement of your design.

Conclusions (5 % marks - Individual component)

The conclusions section provides an effective ending to your report. The content should be related
directly to the aims of the project as stated in the introduction, and sum up the essential features of
your work. This section contains:

 State whether you have achieved your aims.

 Give a brief summary of the key findings or information in your report.
 Highlight the major outcomes of your investigation and their significance.

References (5 % Marks - Individual component)

The two parts to referencing are:

 citations in the text of the report

 a list of references in the final section
A citation shows that information comes from another source. The reference list gives the details of
these sources. You need to use in-text citations and provide details in the references section when:

 you incorporate information from other sources; e.g.:

o factual material
o graphs and tables of data
o pictures and diagrams

 you quote word-for-word from another work (when you do this the page number must be
given in the in-text citation)

Here, we are using referencing style as in the author-date (Harvard) system

Appendices
These contain material that is too detailed to include in the main report, such as raw data or detailed
drawings. The conventions for appendices are as follows:
 Each appendix must be given a number (or letter) and title;
 Each appendix must be referred by number (or letter) at the relevant point in the text.
Presentation (10 % Marks - Individual component)
Prepare and present an overview of the Hang Glide in the class presentation. The presentation will
last approximately 15 minutes followed by a five-minute session where you will be expected to
answer questions and demonstrate the Hang Glide functioning. In the presentation you should be
able to:-
 Explain and highlight the Hang Glide.
 Able to show the different components with different views for the Hang Glide.
