Chinese New Year
February 12, 2021

The Chinese New Year, also called "Lunar New Year" or "Spring Festival", is the most significant
celebration in China. It is defined as the first day of the first month in the traditional Chinese calendar.
Unlike the western calendar, which is based on a solar calendar, the Chinese eastern calendar is based on a
lunisolar calendar, that is, the date indicates both the phase of the moon and the time of the solar year. This
festival has been going on for more than four thousand years. The 2021 is going to celebrate the new year
number 4718 in the Chinese calendar.
The Chinese lunar calendar is the longest chronological record in history, dating back to 2,637 BC. when
the first cycle of the zodiac was introduced. A complete cycle lasts 60 years and is made up of five
simple cycles of 12 years each. Cycle 78 began in February 1984 and will end in February 2044.

Twelve animals were assigned to each of the 12 years, when, according to legend, Buddha summoned all
the animals in front of him before he left Earth. This new year is going to follow the year of ox.

The Chinese New Year celebration starts from New Year's Eve and lasts for about 15 days until the
middle of the first month. This festival involves the largest movement of people in China, taking up all
means of transport, since everyone travels to meet their family or friends.
The preparations is going to begin in January, before the celebration, since the house must first be completely
cleaned and traditional decorations displayed. The ancestors are also remembered and prayed for in order to be
on the "good side", and improve the chances of good fortune in the coming year, among many other traditions,
although the most important thing about this holiday is the time for the meeting. family. The Chinese people buy
for their friends and family gifts and things in general, visit their relatives and friends, watch traditional Chinese
shows, launch fireworks, and plan the celebration for next year for next year.
Traditions in Chinese New Year
Clean the house completely in order to get rid of bad luck accumulated from the previous year. Later, after
the arrival of the New Year, it cannot be swept during the first days, that way all the good luck that was
obtained will not be expelled outside the home.
Decorations of flags and red emblems with the phrase "good fortune for the new year" this means that the
flag going to give their people
c good luck starting in February, usually predominate in every house and
corner of China. They are usually placed at the main entrance of the house and must be red, since it is the
color of good luck, which symbolizes the vitality of life and happiness.

Red envelopes are a tradition that belongs only to children, who receive these envelopes from their
relatives with money inside. Sometimes instead of gifts, people send their friendsc and family these red
envelopes called "hong pao" with gold letters, messages of prosperity and / or traditional symbols of good
fortune.
If the Chinese people are not tired, they keep celebrating.

Firecrackers and fireworks do not stop day and night, they are a fundamental part of these parties. One of the
characteristics is that when you light firecrackers, the dragon will wake up and with it the spring rains will
come, and when it rains in spring, it brings abundance in the crops. Another reason for its use is that when it
is turned on in the middle of the Lion and Dragon Dance (in parades) or in front of the main entrance of the
house, loud and annoying noises will tend to scare away evil spirits and bad luck for them to move away and
never come back.
In the Chinese New Year, 7 popular foods are eaten among the Chinese, it is very interesting that each of
them has its symbolic meaning that is based on its appearance or pronunciations. They are foods to bring
good luck and are served during the 16-day festival season, especially the end of the year.
Not only the dishes themselves are imported, but also the preparation and the ways of serving and eating,
everything has a lot of meaning.

Chinese New Year food includes fish, ravioli, spring rolls, rice balls, niangao. They usually prepare meals
with vegetables, fruits, legumes, and natural things to stay healthy. They always eat these 7 foods every
new year, every 12 of February and include the symbolism behind all of them. If they have food left over,
they give it to the homeless.
