Cleaning and Decorating Houses with Red Things
Before the Spring Festival, people clean their houses very well to get rid of the
old bad luck and invite good luck. Red is a special color for this festival
because it brings good things and protects from bad things. You can see red
lanterns in streets, and red papers with special words are put on doors.

Offering Sacrifices to Ancestors

During the Chinese New Year, families remember their ancestors. They visit
their ancestors' graves and leave gifts the day before New Year's Day. Before
the special dinner on New Year's Eve, they offer food to their ancestors to
show respect. They also set an extra place at the dinner table for their
ancestors to join in spirit.

Enjoying a Family Reunion Dinner on Lunar New Year's Eve
Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year, is a special time for families to
gather. The evening before Chinese New Year is very important. People everywhere
try to be at home with their families. They have a special dinner called the 'reunion
dinner'. Big families, with grandparents, parents, and children, sit together at round
tables. They eat delicious food and enjoy spending time with each other.

Exchanging Red Envelopes and other Gifts

During Chinese New Year, people give special red envelopes with money inside.
These are called red packets. They are often given to children and older people who
have retired. The red envelope with money is called "ya sui qian" in Chinese, which
means 'suppressing Sui [the demon] money'. When someone gets a red envelope,
they're wished a safe and peaceful year ahead.
