Lesson 1- Agility

Name: Dylan Miller Subject: Physical Education Grades: K-4

Lesson Title: Star Wars Tag Date: 3/12/2018
I. Learning Central Focus
Central Focus The central focus of my learning segment is for my students to be able to properly
demonstrate the skills, and cues that are used in Star Wars tag. Students will also
demonstrate their ability to work well with others. The purpose of the star wars tag is to
develop students’ loco motor skills, manipulative and non-manipulative skills. Star Wars tag
also develops students’ agility, and teaches them how to work in secession from one stage to
another, using a number of different strategies.

their peers. Differentiation- The manner of attempts will be adjusted for special needs if
necessary.

II. Preparation
Theoretical Principals The drills and instruction carried out in this lesson are appropriate for the students because
and Research-based they demonstrate Bandura’s theory of Modeling and Imitation. Bandura’s Social Learning
Best Practices Theory states that people learn from one another, through observation, imitation, and
modeling. This theory encompasses attention, memory, and motivation.

Materials and resources Materials needed: 25-30 Yellow Hula Hoops, 1 Black Hula Hoop, 3 pool noodles- pink, blue, and
used: green, 25-30 white flags, 1 black and white striped pinnie, and 1 green pinnie.

III. Academic Language Demand(s) see Bloom’s Taxonomy/Webb’s Depth of knowledge chart
Language Function : The class will be able to: Demonstrate the proper techniques used in Star Wars tag.

Language Demands: Explain the proper instructional cues for each stage of Star Wars tag;
Describe what action should be taken when tagged by different characters in Star Wars tag.
Identify the equipment used by the different characters in Star Wars tag.
Evaluate themselves as well as their peers throughout the stages of this lesson;
Assess their progress during the different stages of Star Wars tag.
IV.Student Support Considerations
Differentiation/Planned Whole Class: during whole class instruction, I will frequently ask questions to check for
Support understanding, and to monitor if the instruction needs to be modified for certain students who
may not be understanding as well as others.
Groups of students with similar needs: I may try to group them according to their ability levels
in order for the teams to be better matched.
Student Interactions Individual students: I will move around throughout the lesson to monitor each individual
student. I may need to spend a little more time with some students’ one on one to ensure that
they are not struggling with techniques.
Students with IEPs or 504 plans: Any instruction can be modified as necessary to
accommodate the unique needs of students with IEP's or 504 plans. However, there are no
students in this particular group with IEP, or 504 plans.
V. Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks
Instruction: Before Introduction to the lesson/ warm ups and stretches
(Engage) The instructor will greet the students at the beginning of the lesson. The class will begin with
the students siting in their designated class lines, and wait for further instruction. After all
students are seated, class will begin with warm-ups, followed by stretches to loosen up the
entire body to help prevent injury. After the students have properly stretched enough to
prevent injury, then the instructor will call them all in so that they can hear the orientation of
the lesson. The instructor will begin the orientation to the lesson by asking the students and
what they like about Star Wars. This will include questions like, "how many of you have seen
Star Wars before”. After the Q & A session, the instructor will provide a brief introduction to
the game of Star Wars tag, and begin to introduce the first stage of Star Wars tag.

Instruction: During Warm ups and Stretches: The lesson will begin with basic warm-ups including walking in
(Explain) place, elevating knees, marching with knees held high, swinging arms while marching, and
jogging in place. Once the students have had enough activity to warm up their bodies,
instructor will initiate a series of stretches to properly warm up the whole body to prevent any
injuries from occurring. All stretches will be held for 10 seconds. Stretches will include:
 Wrist stretches- Students will hold wrist in both flexion and extension positions.
Repeat on other wrist.
 Forearm and shoulder stretches- Students will stretch forearms by stretching their
right arm across their chest and locking into the stretch position with the left arm bent
at the elbow to secure the stretch, then switch arms.
 Lower back stretches- Students will stand with their feet shoulder width apart and
twist lower back to the left and right sides until the lower back muscles are properly
loosened and stretched.
 Toe touches from both standing and sitting positions holding each side.
 Leg lunges- 5 lunges on each leg, keeping the knee above the foot in front.

Content of Lesson: After the orientation to the lesson the instructor will begin the content
portion of Star Wars tag.
1. The instructor will gather students together in their class lines to explain how to start
Star Wars tag, and demonstrate the movements used to move to and from different
pathways. The instructor will explain what equipment is being used, what it is being
used for, and how it should be used.
2. The instructor will explain that the music is the start and stop cue. Explaining that
when the music stops the students are to freeze, be seated on the floor quietly where
they are, and place their equipment on the floor, waiting for further instruction on the
next stage of Star Wars tag.
3. The instructor will explain to the students that if they have a dispute during the course
of the game, they should ask the other student to resolve it by going to the Win-Win
Lesson Focus: Star Wars
Wall and talking it out.
Tag Stages.
4. The instructor will begin Star Wars tag by being sure to spread the students out so
that they have enough space to move around comfortably and safely in stage one. In
stage one all students begin the game as Rebels. On the instructor’s signal, the Rebels
explore the solar system by running, hopping, skipping, galloping, jumping, or leaping
around, while avoiding contact with other Rebels. The instructor will explain that five
sit ups, or five jumping jacks are to be completed, if two students collide with one
another, before returning to the game. Stage one should last 2-3 minutes.
5. After stage one is complete the instructor will go over the rules of stage two. The
teacher will tell the students upon hearing about the rebel activity in this solar system,
the Empire decides to send in a squadron of Stormtroopers to deal with the rebels.
The instructor will select 2-4 students to become Stormtroopers. The Stormtroopers
will be given a white flag for identification, and a yellow hula hoop as a blaster. The
Stormtroopers will be instructed to attempt to tag Rebels by kicking their blaster (hula
hoop) so that it slides on the ground and makes contact with a Rebel’s feet. If a Rebel
is tagged, they are to complete five push-ups, sit-ups, or jumping jacks, and then
become frozen in place (carbonite) for the remainder of the stage. Stage two should
last 3-4 minutes.
6. Moving on to Stage three, the instructor will explain to the students after getting word
the Rebel fleet is under attack, the Rebel alliance sends two of their greatest leaders:
Luke Skywalker and general princess Leia Organa. Then the instructor will select two
students to be Luke and Leia. Luke and Leia will each be given a lightsaber (pool
noodle). Luke and Leia will attempt to free frozen Rebels by tapping them lightly with
their lightsaber. But being Rebels themselves, Luke and Leia must avoid being tagged
by the Stormtroopers. If tagged, they become frozen. However Leia may unfreeze
Luke and vice-versa. This stage should last 3-4 minutes.
7. After stage three is complete the instructor will go over the rules of stage four. The
instructor will explain, hearing Luke and Leia have joined the battle, the Empire sends
in their most feared leader: Darth Vader. Darth Vader must wear a black and white
pinnie and is given a black blaster (hula hoop). Just like the Stormtroopers, Darth
Vader attempts to tag Rebels with his blaster. However, if a Rebel is tagged with Darth
Vader’s blaster, they must get a white flag, and yellow blaster (hula hoop), and rejoin
the game as a Stormtrooper. Therefore, there will be more and more Stormtroopers
entering the game. If Luke or Leia are tagged by Darth Vader, they are to drop their
lightsaber (pool noddle) so that another Rebel can become Luke or Leia, and rejoin the
game as a Stormtrooper. This stage should last 3-4 minutes.
8. Moving to the fifth and final stage of Star Wars tag. The instructor will explain having
felt a great disturbance in the force, Master Yoda decides to join the battle. The
instructor will select one student to play the role of Yoda. Yoda must wear a green
pinnie and is given a green lightsaber (pool noodle). Yoda will be instructed to play the
same role as Darth Vader, except that he targets Stormtroopers. If a Stormtrooper is
tagged by Yoda’s lightsaber, that Stormtrooper must put away their flag and blaster,
and rejoin the game as a Rebel. Being masters of force, Yoda and Darth Vader are
immune to all Blaster attacks (including each other). This Stage should last 4-5
minutes.
9. The instructor will move around and observe the students, and give positive and
constructive feedback if needed while the students are demonstrating the different
stages of Star Wars tag.
10. Common Errors will be identified: Failure to keep blasters (hula hoops) on the floor.
Failure to complete 5 sit-ups, push-ups, or jumping jacks at various stages of the
game. Becoming a Stormtrooper when they should be frozen in carbonite.
11. After all stages of Star Wars tag are complete the students will be instructed to freeze
in place. Then they will be instructed to return their equipment in individual groups
pertaining to the equipment they have, and return to their class lines.
12. After all equipment is returned and students are seated quietly in their class lines, the
instructor will begin the cognitive Q&A session as a group. The instructor will ask the
students a number questions about different aspects of the game.
Instruction: After The instructor will use the three assessment tools (behavior checklist, cognitive assessment
(Evaluation/Extension) quiz, and psychomotor performance evaluation rubric) to evaluate overall performance and
Assessment(s) help the instructor to properly evaluate each student’s understanding and comprehension of
the lesson, as well as help the instructor determine who needs improvement on mastering the
skills. This information will be beneficial when preparing the next lesson.
Instructional Objective (Daily Outcome):
Psychomotor - After the students have received the appropriate amount of instruction and
practice, they will be able to demonstrate the proper techniques for serving in volleyball. They
will be assessed using the Psychomotor Performance Evaluation Rubric. (Student should score
7 out of 9 possible points on the rubric for satisfactory performance.)
Cognitive – After the students have received the appropriate amount of instruction and
practice, they will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of key principles and terminology
related to Star Wars tag by answering 3 out of 5 questions correctly during the cognitive
assessment quiz at the end of class. (Questions are located on the Cognitive Assessment page
attached.)
Affective – After the students have received the appropriate amount of instruction and
practice, they will demonstrate positive and encouraging behavior toward their peers, and will
score 7 out of 9 on a checklist based on their attitudes and willingness to work together with
their peers
Differentiation- The manner of attempts will be adjusted for special needs if necessary.
Extension(s) After all assessments are done, and equipment is put away, the students will return to their
class lines. The instructor will recap the different stages of Star Wars tag. The instructor will ask
if there are any questions about the lesson. After Q&A, the instructor will discuss common
errors that are generally made. The instructor will also discuss safety, and how careless errors
can be very detrimental. Feedback will be given to the class as a whole. The instructor will be
sure to point out many of the positive aspects that were noticed during the lesson.
Encouragement and praise will come before and constructive feedback when addressing the
group.
