Lecture – 2
Carbon in iron, steel and ferro-alloys
• Combined form
• Uncombined form
• Total Carbon
1.) Determination of Graphite in iron
2.) Determination of Carbon by Eggertz Method
3.) Determination of Carbon by combustion
method
1.)

• Sample – 1.5 gms – Dissolve in 50ml HNO3

• Boil it – to avoid ppt. of SiO2
• Filter left out graphite
• Wash with hot water – hot 10 % HCl – hot
5%NH4OH – To dissolve away any compounds
• Dry – heat (1000°C) – Cool – Weigh
2.)
• Sample – 0.1 gm – Dissolve in dil. HNO3 –
• Heat solution – for complete dissolution
• Cool and filter out any ppt.
• Compare with std. sample solution
