ISIP, LESTER DL.

REFLECTION PAPER JAKOB THE LIAR

Jakob was a middle-aged widower cafe owner settled ing Poland as a captive of

the Nazis in a small town. He was then sent to the headquarters for breaking the curfew

while he was trying to catch a newspaper (as during these times, any form of news is

forbidden), he got in the office to receive his punishment right before the head was even

there, he accidentally hears a radio dispatch stating that Soviet forces are a few

kilometers from where they are and are threatening the Germans. He shares this good

news with Mischa, who did spread news where he has concluded that Jakob had a

forbidden radio causing everyone’s attention to know what’s the progress of the war. He

kept their spirits up by fabricating lies. Jakob kept on telling these false details about the

news he heard from the radio to his co-workers because he didn’t want these people to

lose hope and by means to lessen the suicides in their area.

Hope is what Jakob wants for everyone to have, a positive spiritual practice,

through difficult times. It is often discovered in unexpected places. His intentions were

pure and even if all those he said were lies, he had brought the unity of the community

back, their views on freedom.
