The Old Man

The sunrise, of course, doesn’t care if we watch it or not. It will keep on being
beautiful, even if no one bothers to look at it.” said the old man as he wanders down the
hallway waiting for the crack of dawn. From his apartment, you can say that he is a normal
old man, but he's far from what you think he is.
He orders food at an unpopular local fast-food chain where they serve stuff today's children
won't eat. The place where he orders his food is already running down, the tables are
wobbly and the lights already flickering like they haven't changed it yet. Still, he eats there.
After going to the fast-food chain, he goes to the supermarket to buy all the ingredients he
needs to make make an apple pie like fresh red apples for the filling, and large white eggs
for the batter.

Though I had some doubts, I think he has a family of his own. I see them come to
their grandfather's apartment occasionally during the afternoon. They come to their
grandfather's apartment wearing clothes used during church mass and making dinner for
him. He often asks about his grandkid's grades as they cook dinner.

One night, I heard a loud sound inside that man's apartment. I called the other
neighbors to help me investigate what just happened. We rushed to his apartment finding
him on the floor like he was dead. We helped him up just finding out that he was fine. He
said that he fell from the stairs.

I was thinking of how he survived a line of stairs with his age. It turned out that he used to
be a bodybuilder when he was young, and he also served in the army. That's strange, I said
to myself learning about his past.

That old man was very inclined with music. When he was younger he was a world-class
soloist at the violin. He used to play in a big orchestra where they preformed songs.

I was walking down the street when I saw one of the man's family members. I went out to
greet her. She didn't respond to my greetings. She was too busy with her phone, so I
continued minding my own business.
The Old Man

I went back to my apartment to cook some noodles when suddenly, an earthquake

happened. The tremors felt very strong. I went down the building as soon as I can. My other
neighbors were going down too. As we went down, I saw the old man struggling to get
down, so we helped him get down.

As we stayed down the building, an aftershock came. This aftershock's tremor was too
strong, to say the least. When the building started shaking, all of us went outside the
complex. Finding out that we weren't going to get out of this alive, we panicked.

Out of all the panic, the old man stayed subtle. He did not panic, he stayed relaxed. He did
not see any concern. All of us were thinking about themselves except for the old man.

After the earthquake, the old man gave cookies to the children in the hall way. He also
helped with the cleaning of the debris left by the earthquake. I felt very proud of his doings.

A year has passed when I realized the family was coming more often to the old man’s
apartment. They keep going every week. I think somethings happening with the old man I
thought. There was something indeed that is happening upon the old man’s family.

I heard that the old man has caught the flu. The family said that it was no ordinary flu, It
was SARS. I heard about SARS before i the news but thought it wouldn’t reach the country,
but it did. I felt bad for the old man’s family when i heard about the news.

Two weeks passed when i was noted that the old man died. I felt sad when he the old man
died was very kind to the other people in the building. He did many things during his time.
He was an interesting man.
