Since the attainment of freedom from European colonization, Sri Lanka had to experience a civil war for 30 years which ended in 2009 at the expense of thousands of civilian lives. Under the guidance of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa of the then Government, Sri Lankan armed forces fought valiantly to protect the country from LTTE militants. | J 73 YEARS 1948-2021 — INDEPENDENCE DAY ——e kK 04™ FEBRUARY The 73rd Independence Day celebration commenced with the presence of the Sri Lankan President and the Prime Minister at the Independence Square premises, Colombo. In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the 73rd Independence Day is celebrated following the Covid-19 guidelines and the number of guests and dignitaries attending the celebration are limited as well. Defence Secretary Major General Kamal Gunaratne (Retd.) assured, the number of squadrons participating in the parade are low compared to the previous years and all the participants was subjected to PCR tests or rapid antigen tests beforehand. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s address to the nation was followed by the Armed Forces' parade in which the squadrons consist of 3153 army personnel, 821 of Navy personnel, 742 Air Force personnel, 510 Police personnel, and 457 Civil Security Force personnel. The Independence Day celebration ended with several cultural events with the participation of around 340 dancers and musicians. LEO TIMES | 02 Back in 3rd century AD, under Roman Emperor Claudius Il, marriages were banned. The Emperor, who had to keep a strong army, believed that single men were better soldiers. Saint Valentine a clergyman didn't agree with the Emperor's view. He covertly helped — Christian couples in love solemnise their marriages. After the Emperor learned of this, he ordered that Saint Valentine be imprisoned and beheaded. The sentence was executed on February 14. The date of Saint Valentine's beheading coincided with the feast of Lupercalia, a pagan fertility ritual. As years passed by and Rome became Christian, the Catholic Church scrapped Lupercalia and declared February 14 Saint Valentine's Day. Gradually, February 14 became a date for expressing love and admiration. This custom, with time, spread throughout Europe and then to several parts of the world. Today, Valentine's Day has become an important cultural and commercial occasion, but there are no rules to celebrate it. People in various cultures in different parts of the world have developed their own traditions around the day of love. In some cultures, Valentine's Day is celebrated as a day to make family and friends feel special, while in others people find unique ways to shower their romantic partners with love. A candlelight dinner, movie date or Valentine's Day party are also some ways to celebrate love on 14th February. In some parts of the world, the day is commemorated by giving gifts to children. Furthermore, in. the present time of social media trends, Valentine's Day has gone more viral. As people try to show their imagined best self on social media platforms, the unique and_ innovative ways to celebrate this day of love have increased exponentially.
