Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Florida after his parents divorced when he was 16,
dropping out of school a year later, hoping to pursue a career as a musician.

He discovered acting when he visited Los Angeles (California) with his ex-wife, Lori
Anne Allison, who introduced him to actor Nicolas Cage, who in turn introduced him to his
impresario. Shortly thereafter, he made his debut in 1984 with A Nightmare on Elm Street.
In 1987, he became famous when he replaced Jeff Yagher as undercover cop Tommy Hanson
in the television series 21 Jump Street. In 1990, after many films for teenagers, the beginning
of a long working relationship, but also of friendship, with the director Tim Burton, when he
played the main role in Edward Scissorhands (Edward Scissors Hands). After this success,
Depp managed to create his own style, receiving more and more gloomy and very different
roles, able to surprise both critics and the public.

Johnny Depp played many roles in his career, including a character in a book,
Inspector Fred Abberline from From Hell in 2001. In 2003 he starred opposite Antonio
Banderas and Salma Hayek in Once Upon a Time. Mexico (Once in Mexico - Desperado 2),
and later that year began playing the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in the blockbuster Pirates
of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Career

He made his debut in A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984). In 1987, he took the place
of Jeff Yagher as undercover cop Tommy Hanson in the popular TV series 21 Jump Street
(1987). In 1990, after a few less important roles, he began a fruitful collaboration with
director Tim Burton. The first film the two collaborated on was Edward Scissorhands (1990).
He continued to gain popularity and fame through his second collaboration with Tim Burton
in Ed Wood (1994).

The most remarkable roles:

Jack Sparrow
Captain Jack Sparrow is a character played by Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the
Caribbean movie series. He was introduced in the film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of
the Black Pearl (2003), and then in the next two films, The Chest of the Dead Man (2006) and
At the End of the World (2007).

Initially, Sparrow was conceived, for the first film, as a trickster who guides the hero,
Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), but Johnny Depp's interpretation has changed his role. Depp's
emphatic and eccentric characterization, partly inspired by Pepé le Pew and Keith Richards,
turned Sparrow into an unconventional antihero, becoming the main character of the three
films. Depp received his first Oscar nomination, and in a life story imitating art, Richards
played a cameo role, portraying Jack Sparrow's father.

Gellert Grindelwald

Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald is an infamous and powerful dark wizard who
has provoked mass violence, terror and chaos around the world, seeking to lead a new witch
world order based on his strong belief in the superiority of wizards. As teenagers, he and
Dumbledore had become lovers. He escapes from MACUSA in New York and renews his
efforts for Pureblood world domination. It was Depp's idea for the character's heterochromy,
saying he saw Grindelwald as "more than one ... almost as if they were two people." In
November 2020, Depp resigned from the role at the request of Warner Bros. because of his
personal legal problems. Later that month, it was reported that Mads Mikkelsen was in early
talks to replace Depp as Grindelwald for the third film. On November 25, 2020, Warner
Bros. announced that Mads Mikkelsen would replace Depp as Grindelwald.

Edward Scissorhands
Although Burton was unfamiliar with Johnny Depp's then-21 Jump Street show, he
had always been Burton's first choice. At the time of his casting, Depp wanted to step out of
the status of teenage idol that his performance on 21 Jump Street had given him. When the
script was sent to him, Depp "cried like a newborn" and immediately found personal and
emotional connections to the story. In preparation for the role, Depp watched many of Charlie
Chaplin's films to study the idea of creating sympathy without dialogue. Fox studio directors
were so concerned about Edward's image that they tried to keep images of Depp in full suit
until the film's release.
