Governor Gavin Newsom Lifts Outdoor
Dining Restrictions in California

Los Angeles County restaurant owners are rejoicing after learning about Governor
Gavin Newsom’s decision to lift outdoor dining restrictions throughout the state. As of
January 25th, eating establishments across the county can now serve customers
in-person. Before the restrictions were relaxed, food could only be picked up or
delivered because dining in wasn’t an option.

As long as restaurants have no more than 50 percent capacity, they can start serving
diners outdoors. Experts warn that “the situation can change overnight” and that it’s not
a call to return to risky pre-pandemic behavior. If hospitals in the area start to see an
influx of patients, city officials will put restrictions into place once again.

Social distancing, handwashing, and mask-wearing are effective ways to prevent the
spread of COVID-19. Diners are encouraged to proceed with extreme caution, caring for
themselves and those around them by staying home if they’re not feeling well.
Vulnerable populations such as people with autoimmune diseases and the elderly can
continue to enjoy take-out and delivery services offered by their favorite restaurants.

Although outdoor dining is now an option, indoor dining in the state is not. It may be
months before families can gather again to celebrate a birthday or holiday in a
restaurant setting. For now, however, they can enjoy a meal outdoors with their
household as long as they’re willing to play it safe and wear a mask while they’re not
eating.
