Instructions:
1. Please turn off or silence your cell phone and/or other distractions.
2. There are 5 questions to this exam and a total of 100 points.
3. Attempt all questions and remember to check your solutions. Partial credit will be given for quality
work, even if the final answer is incorrect.
4. Each question must be fully explained, in addition to finding the solution. Include:
o Final answer with a circle or box around it
o All work and steps that led to the final answer
o A detailed description of how this type of problem is solved or an explanation of each step and
why you made the decision that you did (i.e. “To find the y-intercept…” or “Next, I will solve by
substitution.” or “This requires the power rule for exponents.”)
5. You may write these answers on notebook paper, type them in Word, present them in a PowerPoint,
or choose another format that can be uploaded to Brightspace, preferably as a PDF.
6. Student notes, textbook(s), other course materials, and calculators are allowed. Other people and
search engines or mathematics sites are not (i.e. Wolphram Alpha, Khan Academy).
7. Type or write this honor code at the end of your exam: I confirm that all work on this exam is solely my
own. I did not seek help from any other individuals and/or use unauthorized materials. If I was unclear
about which materials were allowed, I sought clarification from the instructor.
8. Your exam must be submitted in Brightspace no later than 4:30 PM on Thursday, October 22 nd.
9. Take a deep breath—you’ve got this!
1. Pablo, Faustino, and Mark swim at a public pool each day for exercise. One day Pablo swam five more
than three times as many laps as Mark, and Faustino swam four times as many laps as Mark. If the men
swam 29 laps altogether, how many laps did each one swim?
Just one problem at a time…
2. Solve and graph the solution set for
Think of your up-to-bat song. This is your time to shine!

3. Analyze the following linear equations of the form

a) Graph each linear equation;

b) Determine if the slope of the line is positive negative, zero, or undefined;
c) Then, decided whether the pair of lines is parallel, perpendicular, or neither.
Be confident! Don’t let maths tell you that you don’t know the answer!
4. Solve the following problem about quantities and their costs: Twice as many general admission tickets
to a basketball game were sold as reserved seat tickets. General admission tickets cost $10 and reserved
seat tickets cost $15. If the total value of both kinds of tickets was $26,250, how many tickets of each kind
were sold?
You’ve done much harder things than this. Keep going!

5. Simplify the following expressions.

a) b)

c) ) d)
Last leg of the race—keep going!
