Eddie Aikau was a lifesaver, he would put his life on the line to save manys.

Eddie Aikau plays a very important part in hawaiian history. He was the first lifeguard in
Waimea, one of the most dangerous beaches. He also surfed waves over 40ft and he
was a waterman in general. Then he took part in a voyage but during the voyage the
canoe collapsed and Eddie Aikau sacrificed his life.
Eddie Aikau was the second oldest of his brothers and sisters. In their free time
they would go surf Kahului harbor with their dad. In 1959 they moved to Oahu and
Eddie worked at Dole pineapple canary to buy his first surfboard.He had many surfing
Idols growing up. Eddie Aikau looked at surfing as not a contest but a goal. When he
was an adult he would surf waves up to 40ft and won many awards including the Duke
kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship. In his honor a surf contest called the
Eddie Aikau big wave international is put on with 28 competitors.

Eddie Aikau is an extraordinary lifeguard, he brought lifeguarding to another
level. Eddie was also the first official lifeguard for Waimea Bay in 1967.In Addition to
that his brother Clyde helped him out too. And over the years that he worked there he
never lost a life.In all Eddie Aikau rescued over 500 people. He would put his life on the
line by going out in 30 foot waves to rescue someone. In 1971 he was lifeguard of the

The Polynesian voyaging Society was looking for people to join them on their
30-day Voyage. They left on March 16th 1978 and headed south. Eddie Aikau joined
them since he wanted to be a part of Hawaiian history and he was very proud of his
heredity. Eddie Aikau made Hawaiian for the North Star, a song composed for the
hokule'a(Double hull Canoe).As they made their way out the weather conditions got
worse and one of the canoe hulls had a leak. 12 miles off the coast of Lanai the
Hokule'a capsized. Therefore the emergency rations and supplies were washed
overboard. The whole crew held onto the canoe for 9 hours. Eddie decided to paddle
his surfboard towards Lanai to get help. He wrapped a couple oranges around his neck
and took off paddling towards Lanai in the dangerous conditions.The silhouette of him
got smaller and smaller. Hours after that the Coast Guard rescued the crew. This
launched the largest airseach in hawaiian history for Eddie Aikau. Thus that was the last

Eddie Aikau will be remembered as a hero to hawaiian history. He showed
heroicness in harsh conditions that rescued people. He also showed his bravery when
he surfed over 40 foot waves at Waimea. And he showed his courage when he lost his
life attempting to save the rest of his crew. Hence this shows that Eddie Aikau was
extraordinary in hawaiian history.
