1 Introduction
1.1 General
This manual is intended to provide user a clear explanation regarding the installation and operation of their newly acquired
UV system.

It is recommended to carefully read and follow the guidelines set in this manual and pay attention to chapter 2 to ensure
USER SAFETY.

Personnel that are to work with and operate the UV system are expected to have sufficient knowledge of electrical,
mechanical and process issues. Always be aware of the dangers and risks of working with UV light.

1.2 System
bestUV systems have been designed for the treatment of liquids. By using state of the art UV technology, the system will
provide years of reliable operation. Because of the use of high grade parts the required service intervals are limited, with
only a few parts that require periodic replacement. See chapter 9 for details on the service and maintenance of the UV
system.

1.3 CE conformity
The producer, bestUV, states that the UV system conforms to the following directives:

• Electrical equipment of machines NEN-EN-IEC 60204-1

• EMC directive 2014/30/EU
• Low voltage directive 2014/35/EU
• PED Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU Art 4, par. 3

The CE conformity can only be guaranteed with original spare parts. If non-original parts are used the CE-conformity is void
as is any remaining warranty on the system.

1.4 System configurations

bestUV systems are available in various model ranges to ensure specific project requirements can be met. Depending on
process requirements and required control options a Lambda controller for the system is selected. Chapter 7 contains an in-
depth description of the controller, its functions and how to use it to control and safeguard the process.

4 Installation
4.1 Scope of supply
All bestUV systems are supplied with the following items:
• UV chamber
• Electrical cabinet
• UV lamp(s)
• All electrical cables between the UV chamber and electrical cabinet

4.2 Storage
The bestUV system and spare parts must be stored in a dry environment at a temperature between 10-30ºC, using the
original packaging.

4.3 Mechanical installation

The UV chamber houses the UV lamp(s) used to treat the water or other fluid used in the process. To ensure a proper
operation of your UV system it must be installed according to the recommendations below. Any deviations should be
checked with the supplier before installation.

• The UV chamber must preferably be installed horizontally with the outlet position always on top.
• Make sure no air can be entrapped in the UV chamber.
• The UV chamber must be installed in such a way it is always filled with fluid.
• Install the chamber in a clean, dry environment protected from temperatures below 0ºC and above 45ºC.
• Provide sufficient space for servicing. See the mechanical layout drawing of the UV chamber for the minimum
distance required.
• For optimal serviceability, a height between 1-1.5m is recommended.
• Fit isolation valves at the inlet and outlet positions so the chamber can be blocked in and drained during servicing.
• Use a (electrical) valve on the outlet side 4 , connected to the UV control cabinet to protect your process from
_

untreated water in case of malfunction.

• Fit sample valves before and after UV (at a minimum distance of 0,5m from the UV chamber).
• Before taking the system into operation make sure that all piping is clean.
• The UV chamber should be connected to ground according to local regulations.
• The UV system must be installed in such a way that there is no mechanical stress on the connection flanges.
• The UV system must be installed in such a way there are no vibrations during operation.
• Use stainless steel bolts to install the UV system in the pipe work to avoid corrosion.

The UV chamber must be connected to ground! Failure to do so increases the risk of electric shock!

Keep in mind that UV-C radiation ages PVC and most other plastics at an increased rate. It is recommended
to use UV-C resistant materials on the in- and outlet connections of the UV system.

4 An electrical valve is not part of the UV system and has to be purchased separately

6 Maintenance
It is recommended to regularly inspect the UV system to see if it is still operating correctly. For optimum and reliable
operation of the UV system, maintenance is required at least once per year. Maintenance involves cleaning of the UV
system, replacement of serviceable parts and replacement of UV lamps and quartz sleeves based on running hours.
Although the maintenance can be carried out by local staff we recommend contacting your local supplier to arrange for a
trained service engineer.

For UV systems with an anti-fouling system see chapter 6 for more information about anti-fouling system maintenance.
Parts can be purchased from your local supplier. For convenience, special service sets have been created for each specific
system containing all required O-rings, seals and other parts required for yearly maintenance.

Minerals in the water can cause fouling of the quartz sleeve(s), reducing the UV intensity in the water. If your bestUV system
does not yet include an anti-fouling system, it is usually possible to upgrade the system. Contact your local supplier for
upgrade possibilities.

In the event one of the UV lamps fails to start it must be replaced.

6.1 Removing a UV lamp

Make sure the main switch is in the OFF position before performing maintenance on the UV system!

The information below assumes the system is running in LOCAL mode. If the UV system is running in
REMOTE mode the start and stop buttons on the UV cabinet cannot be used. Switch the UV system to local
mode first.
